λ A large late 19th century German ivory and silver-gilt mounted tankard, the hinged lid carved with the hero King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden on his horse, Streiff, the silver decorated with war trophies and a female and male mask, the body deeply carved in relief, depicting the death of King Gustavus Adolphus at the battle of Lutzen, with a scroll figural handle and with a conforming base, with German silvermarks '800 crescent moon and castle' and with an indistinct maker's mark, 50.7cm high. Provenance: From a distinguished naval family. King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden (1594-1632) is regarded as the founder of Sweden as a great power, leading his country to military supremacy during the Thirty Years' War. He is regarded as one of the most famous military commanders of all time combining innovative use of weapons, excellent training and backed by an efficient government. His greatest victory was at the Battle of Breitenfield in 1631 however he was killed a year later at the Battle of Lutzen which was one of the most important of the Thirty Years' War.
λ A late 19th century German carved ivory cup and cover, with a standing warrior finial, with his trusty hound, above massacred enemies, the body relief carved with a Greek classical battle scene, with the Amazon tribe of women warriors, on a figural stem with further defeated enemies on a circular base, the inside carved with a coat of arms, 34.5cm high. λ A pair of late 19th century French Dieppe carved ivory figures, of a gentleman with a dress sword and a lady carrying a posy of flowers and a fan, both in 18th century costume, each on an ebonised socle, one with a retailer's paper label inscribed 'Wm OPPENHEIM, DRESDEN CHINA DEPOT, 43 Farringdon St. E.C.', 16.4cm high. λ A large carved ivory figure of James Quin as Sir John Falstaff, the corpulent knight holding a sword and a shield, with a paper sticking out of a pocket in his doublet, inscribed 'Sack, Capon, Bread', standing in front of a tree stump on a leaf carved oval base, late 18th / early 19th century, 50.1cm high. Provenance: From a distinguished naval family. The famous comic character Sir John Falstaff featured in four of Shakespeare's plays, Henry IV part I and part II, Henry V and the Merry Wives of Windsor. The cowardly, corpulent, vain and drunk knight, was played by James Quin (1693-1766) in the middle of the 18th century and porcelain figures were famously produced by the Derby factory c.1760-70. Their model was based on a mezzotint by James McArdell after Francis Hayman.
λ A 19th century Italian fan, with carved and polychrome decorated ivory guards and sticks, the fan painted with a family and a bird in a landscape, together with a similar fan printed and painted with country figures beside a lake with sheep and a dog, a horn fan with swags of flowers and a similar tortoiseshell example, together with a Maximillien fan box, 44.3cm wide (max). A George III giltwood four poster bed, the front posts carved with cluster columns and petal capitals, on panelled square section bases and wooden castors, with Chinese blue and ivory silk tasselled hangings decorated with flowers and foliage (the original canopy now lacking), 238.5cm high, 160cm wide, 193cm long. Provenance: From the collection formed by the late The Hon Mrs Daisy Fellowes, Donnington Grove, Berkshire, ex. The Blue Bedroom. An article written in 1958 suggested that the Chinese silk hangings on the bed matched textiles already at Donnington Grove pointing to the fact that the bed was originally intended for the Grove. The author also discovered sketches for a bed by John Chute (the architect who designed Donnington Grove and also the Palladian staircase at his home The Vyne, Hampshire). The sketches were very similar to the above lot 'with wreathed posts, Chinesey-Gothick cusping and a domed canopy. It was presumably intended for the Vyne, and Chutes accounts show that he employed the celebrated firm of Vile and Cobb for making some furniture. This bed is not unworthy of them too.'.
λ A 19th century carved whale bone sailor's love token seal, in the form of an arm and a hand, engraved with a heart, the end with initials 'W P', together with a turned ivory seal, the matrix with a coat of arms and a death of Nelson card needle book, painted with Nelson's funeral carriage (losses), 11cm (max). A Flemish ebony and kingwood cabinet, inlaid with ivory stringing, with geometric panelled decoration, the hinged top revealing a vacant compartment, above a pair of doors with a ripple moulding, enclosing an arrangement of nine drawers, three with veneered linings, all fitted with later brass ring handles, originally with side carrying handles, late 17th / early 18th century, on an associated and later ebonised stand with winged paw feet, 94.8cm high, 103cm wide, 47.7cm deep. Provenance: The Old Rectory, Little Langford, Wiltshire. Sold by order of Trustees of the Estate of the late Miss S.F. Rooke. Sold in these rooms 8th July 2014, lot 11.
λ A small 18th century and later secretaire on chest, with cross and feather banding, the moulded cornice above a hinged fall, enclosing pigeon holes and a bank of ebony and ivory seaweed marquetry drawers, with a later leather writing surface, above four long graduated drawers, on bracket feet, 124.5cm high, 76.3cm wide, 35.2cm deep.
λ A large late 19th century German ivory carved cup and cover, with a victorious warrior and lion finial, the body of the cup carved with a battle scene with crusaders on horseback, the base with a soldier chaining a prisoner and with war trophies, above a leaf carved and bead moulded plinth, 47.6cm high. λ A fine and large late 19th century German carved ivory lidded tankard, probably Erbach, the finial carved with a warrior on horseback about to throw his spear, above a leaf carved moulding, the body finely relief carved with a continuous classical battle scene, possibly the battle of Issus with Alexander the Great on horseback, the scroll handle carved with a bound captive and a lion's mask, 37.8cm high. Provenance: From a distinguished naval family. Count Franz I of Erbach-Erbach established a guild for ivory carvers in 1783 in the town of Erbach im Odenwald having discovered ivory carving during his visit to Vienna in 1769. Erbach became the 'Ivory Town', and by the end of the 19th century their fame as skilled ivory carvers was established as the 'Rose of Erbach' won an award at the 1873 World Fair in Vienna.

A late 19th/early 20th century Anglo-Indian ivory-mounted box with the Hindu god Krishna engraved into central cartouche, length 19cm and a Victorian coromandel curved top stationery box with brass shield and scroll mounts, length 22.5cm. CONDITION REPORT Split across the base to interior, no apparent damage to the ivory.
