A French officer’s silver mounted hanger from the warship “Glorieux”, captured at the Battle of the Saintes, 1782, broad shallow fullered SE blade 23” and diam 1-7/8” at forte, sheet silver mounted hilt, the short panelled crossguard with whorled terminals, zig zag engraved backstrap to shaped ivory grips bearing a stylized “pineapple” panel each side, the outer one engraved “French prize. Taken in the Glorieux. 12 April 1782”, in its leatherette scabbard with silver locket and chape panelled en suite with hilt; with full photostat details of the “Glorieux” which was captured by the British at the battle of Saintes, during the war with America, April 1782, renamed “HMS Glorious”, and was then lost in a hurricane off Newfoundland 16th/17th Sept the same year. A late 18th century naval officer’s 5 ball hilted spadroon, 17th cent DE blade 28½”, with shallow central fuller at forte, etched on both sides with 5 pellet device, “15”, Running Wolf, “35”, 5 pellets, pellet and crosslet device, gilt hilt with crossguard and quillon, 5 ball sideloop, enclosing a neatly executed pierced and engraved fouled anchor, facetted knucklebow with 5 ball centre section, facetted domed pommel with small incised ornamental bands, fluted panels to ivory grip in the centre of which a gilt border engraved band with an elongated central oval and crowned fouled anchor, in its tooled leather scabbard the chape pricker engraved “Callum & Spalding, King’s Cutlers, Charing Cross”. GC the hilt mounts retaining approx 50% original gilt (crossguard mis-shapen, chape and lower 6” of scabbard missing). Plate 4

A most unusual Wm IV RN officer’s sword of 1822 infantry type, pipe backed blade 32½”, DE at point, by Tatham & Son, 37 Charing Cross, London, etched on both sides with crowned Wm IV cypher and wreath in panel, triple bar hilt (slightly mis-shapen) incorporating pierced crowned fouled anchor, with turn down inner section, flattened lion’s head pommel, plain lower part of backstrap, ivory grips (stained, small chips at top) with chequered lower section surmounted by stylized sunbursts, plain upper section with central diagonal bands, see “May and Annis “Swords for Sea Service” plates 43 and 44.
