A late 18th century naval dirk, DE blade 18”, with back fuller, lightly etched with trophy, oak leaves and acorns, copper gilt border engraved broad flattened S shaped crossguard and finials, facetted domed pommel, fluted panels to ivory grip in the centre of which a border engraved band with an elongated central oval and crowned fouled anchor. GC, the hilt mounts retaining approx 20% original gilt (light wear and pitting to blade). Plate 5
A French officer’s silver mounted hanger from the warship “Glorieux”, captured at the Battle of the Saintes, 1782, broad shallow fullered SE blade 23” and diam 1-7/8” at forte, sheet silver mounted hilt, the short panelled crossguard with whorled terminals, zig zag engraved backstrap to shaped ivory grips bearing a stylized “pineapple” panel each side, the outer one engraved “French prize. Taken in the Glorieux. 12 April 1782”, in its leatherette scabbard with silver locket and chape panelled en suite with hilt; with full photostat details of the “Glorieux” which was captured by the British at the battle of Saintes, during the war with America, April 1782, renamed “HMS Glorious”, and was then lost in a hurricane off Newfoundland 16th/17th Sept the same year. A late 18th century naval officer’s 5 ball hilted spadroon, 17th cent DE blade 28½”, with shallow central fuller at forte, etched on both sides with 5 pellet device, “15”, Running Wolf, “35”, 5 pellets, pellet and crosslet device, gilt hilt with crossguard and quillon, 5 ball sideloop, enclosing a neatly executed pierced and engraved fouled anchor, facetted knucklebow with 5 ball centre section, facetted domed pommel with small incised ornamental bands, fluted panels to ivory grip in the centre of which a gilt border engraved band with an elongated central oval and crowned fouled anchor, in its tooled leather scabbard the chape pricker engraved “Callum & Spalding, King’s Cutlers, Charing Cross”. GC the hilt mounts retaining approx 50% original gilt (crossguard mis-shapen, chape and lower 6” of scabbard missing). Plate 4
A Geo naval dirk, slender DE blade 8½”, with central fuller, small copper inverted bowl shaped guard, embossed with stylized leaves, slender ivory grip, ball pommel with the copper top half in the form of a lion’s head, in its brass scabbard engraved overall with trophy, sea monsters, sun rays, etc in panels, 2 suspension rings. A most unusual Wm IV RN officer’s sword of 1822 infantry type, pipe backed blade 32½”, DE at point, by Tatham & Son, 37 Charing Cross, London, etched on both sides with crowned Wm IV cypher and wreath in panel, triple bar hilt (slightly mis-shapen) incorporating pierced crowned fouled anchor, with turn down inner section, flattened lion’s head pommel, plain lower part of backstrap, ivory grips (stained, small chips at top) with chequered lower section surmounted by stylized sunbursts, plain upper section with central diagonal bands, see “May and Annis “Swords for Sea Service” plates 43 and 44. A naval dirk c 1800, shallow diamond section blade 7", gilt crossguard with heavily embossed stylized foliate design to the top, plain beneath, baluster turned ivory grip and pommel (minor cracks), in its black polished leather sheath with gilt locket and chape, single ring suspension. An unusual 1796 light cavalry officer’s type sword, possibly for naval use, broad, curved shallow fullered blade, 29½”, marked J J Runkel Solingen on backstrap, etched with crowned GR cypher, pre 1801 R Arms and supporters, amid trophies and stylized scrolls, with a little original blueing and gilding, gilt stirrup hilt with lion’s head langets, lion’s head pommel and backstrap, diced ivory grip (cracked and stained). Basically GC for age, the hilt retaining approx 75% gilt (light pitting to blade towards point). Plate 4

An unusual Geo naval officer’s small cutlass/sidearm, broad steeply curved and tapering blade 20”, DE at point and 1-7/8” across at forte, etched with crowned GR cypher, crosslet, floral devices and flourishes, and retaining a little original blueing and gilding at forte, gilt hilt, the S shaped crossguard with deeply embossed foliate langets, lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, part of chain guard, diced ivory grip (small repaired chips to top). Basically GC, the hilt retaining approx 80% gilt (blade heavily cleaned and reseated). Plate 5
