English School (19th century) Portrait of Hortense Eugenie Cecile de Beauharnais Watercolour on ivory (now in two sections) Inscribed and dated Paris 1807 lower right 12.5cm x 11cm within a gilt-metal foliate frame and glazed box, the reverse bearing ink inscription including painted by Bouvier Hortense de Beauharnais (1783-1837), daughter of Alexandre de Beauharnais (1760-94) and Josephine de Beauharnais (1763-1814) [nee Marie Josephe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie]. Her aristocratic father, though he embraced the Republic, was executed during the Terror on trumped up charges for his failure to relieve Metz. Her mother went on to marry Napoleon Bonaparte and as the latter s step-daughter she was persuaded to marry his brother Louis, King of Holland (1806-10), the youngest of their three children becoming Napoleon III.
