1970 Porsche 911T Transmission: manualMileage:The original 911 series is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, especially when its variations are included; namely the powerful 911 derived 935 which won the 24 Hours Le Mans and other major sports car races outright against prototypes. The 911T was the first Porsche to receive the new Bosch K-Jetronic or CIS engine (Continuous Injection System) from January 1973 onwards. Often referred to as 1973 1/2, these T models produced 140bhp and also boasted the newer type standard H pattern (915) gearbox which, in tandem, provided a smooth yet powerful engine and proved great fun to drive. A contemporary Car and Driver extended road test concluded the base spec 911T was the better touring car, with the two fuel injected models being more difficult to handle in traffic and filled with mechanical noises. This stunning left hand drive, 1970 Porsche 911T coupé came off the production line in December 1969 and was first registered in Los Angeles, specified with an optional Blaupunkt stereo, leather steering wheel, and 911S oil tank and instruments. Owned for many years by a Mr Greg Craven in North Carolina, the 911 was imported to Europe in 2014 where it was the subject of a full body and mechanical restoration costing circa 50,000 euros, undertaken by Classic Car Services, under the watchful eye of Noel de Block, one of the leading classic car specialists in Belgium. The opportunity was taken to change the colour from burgundy, to the Porsche colour of ivory white. A full photographic record of the work that was undertaken can be seen on the Classic Car Services website (https://classic-car-service.be/porsche-911-t-karmann-coupe-1969/) and shows the high standard that it was completed to. Subsequently the Porsche was owned by Robert van Weelde, who amongst other things, played cricket for his home nation of the Netherlands! In the current vendors ownership, the 911 has been dry stored and resides in his private collection. The vendor reports that the original 2.2 litre engine offers plenty of power and the 911 drives very well indeed. In fantastic condition throughout the paintwork and interior are in very good order as is the engine bay, and underside. Maintained regardless of cost and following the extensive restoration this wonderful example is ready to enjoy. Offered with a history file including its current UK V5C registration document, previous MoT records, sundry bills, a photographic gallery of the restoration, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming that it retains its original engine. A desirable five speed manual example of the early Porsche 911, fabulously presented. Consignor Daniel Godin

1991 Nissan Figaro Transmission: automaticMileage:65649The Nissan Figaro is a front engine, front wheel drive, two door, 2+2 convertible manufactured for model year 1991, and marketed in Japan at Nissan Cherry Stores. Initially a production run of only 8,000 units was planned, however demand was exceedingly high and after two increases in production schedules a total of 20,073 Figaros were manufactured, all in right hand drive format as they were intended solely for the Japanese market. Even with the greatly increased production numbers, demand was so high that potential purchasers had to enter a lottery to win the chance to buy one. Based on the Nissan Micra K10 platform, the Figaro features a turbocharged 980cc engine, mated to a three-speed automatic gearbox. As a fixed profile convertible, the upper side elements of the Figaro's bodywork remain fixed, while its fabric soft top retracts in conjunction with a solid panel with a glass heated rear window. This retro classic is presented in Emerald Green, being one of only four colours in which they were produced. It has ivory coloured seats with contrasting piping, air conditioning, CD player, chrome and Bakelite-style knobs, soft-feel paint on the dashboard top, chrome-trimmed speedometer with smaller inset gauges for fuel and engine temperature; and chrome-trimmed tachometer with inset clock. This super little car from the Japanese manufacturer is offered to auction with a V5C registration document, various bills and receipts and a fresh MoT test certificate and offers fantastic open top summer fun. Collection of Alfred William Cowperthwaite, acquired from the above c. 1939 and thence by descent in the same family. Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939) was a British anthropologist and museum curator who developed an important ethnographic collection during the early 20th century that is now held in various British museums. With his wife Irene, Beasley set up the Cranmore Ethnographical Museum which eventually held more than 6,000 objects of ethnographical interest. The Beasleys collected objects from across Europe, buying from auction houses and local museums to expand the collection, which contained material from the Pacific, Asia, Africa, and Northwestern America. Beasley wrote numerous articles for anthropological journals and was considered an expert in his field. He died in 1939 and his collection was stored with the British Museum collections during the war, which was fortunate, as the Cranmore Museum was destroyed by bombing. After the war, substantial portions of the collection were passed to the British Museum, the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the University of Cambridge, the Pitt Rivers Museum, and the Merseyside County Museum. Other pieces, such as the present lot, were sold by his widow and, after her death in 1974, by their daughters. A CHICKEN BONE JADE ‘DOUBLE FISH’ MARRIAGE BOWL, 17TH-18TH CENTURY Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. China. The flared sides supported on four short feet and rising to an everted bracket-lobed rim, the interior finely carved in relief to depict two confronting carps with lotus sprigs in their mouths. The opaque stone of a creamy ivory tone with dark veins and patches.Provenance: From an old Swiss private collection and thence by descent to the last owner.Condition: Good condition with minor old wear. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks over time. Microscopic nicks here and there. The rim with a minor chip and associated old fill.Weight: 224.9 g (excl. stand)Dimensions: Length 15.3 cmWith a finely carved and open worked Zitan stand dating from the same period. (2)Marriage bowls are so named because of their auspicious imagery symbolizing a long and happy marriage with abundant offspring to carry on the family line, and thus were often presented as betrothal or wedding gifts. In this case, the imagery is provided by the pair of fish and the lotus flowers as well as the ruyi form.Chicken bone is a term for a rare and highly coveted nephrite jade of an opaque creamy beige color, often with extensive dark veining, which was particularly valued between the later Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is also sometimes said to be ‘burnt jade’ which has an opaque chalky appearance, usually with minute cracks all over the surface. It is known that nephrite - when heated to about 1000 degrees Celsius in a dry atmosphere - breaks down into diopside, enstatite (a magnesium silicate) and some quartz. In an experiment in the Freer Gallery Laboratory, samples of blue-green and white nephrite were submitted to temperatures up to 1025 degrees Celsius and both altered to an opaque chalky beige color with no change in the shape of the piece or the decoration of the surface. The chief mineral which resulted was diopside, and several nephrite jades in the Freer which appear to have been burnt also give a diopside x-ray diffraction pattern. Jadeite when heated in a similar manner behaves quite differently: it fuses to a glassy material, the surface smoothens out, and if the object is small enough it bends out of shape. See Elisabeth West, Jade: Its Character and Occurrence, The Bulletin of the University Museum of Pennsylvania, Volume 5, Issue 2, Winter 1963, page 5.The Qianlong Emperor lauded jades, among many reasons, for the durability that this specific stone offers against the ravages of time and fire, unlike most others. The specific chicken bone color pattern of the present bowl may have been produced either by nature, or by deliberately heating the nephrite in a workshop, or by accidental exposure to fire. The collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing, for example, contains numerous chicken bone jades that were burnt in fires which erupted at the palace over the centuries.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie’s London, 13 May 2016, lot 513Price: GBP 86,500 or approx. Beads like the one in this lot were worn along with headgear, knee decorations, elaborate necklaces, and other body ornaments all made primarily from jade. Dr. Elizabeth Childs-Johnson dubs these cultures a part of the ‘Jade Age,’ a period during which an abundance of jade objects accompanied the elite burials for the first time. The imagery on these adornments was highly standardized, and the most prominent image, which appears on this lot, is that of the godhead (also called a spirit person, shenren, or an anthropomorphized deity).Literature comparison:Compare a related jade bead from the Liangzhu culture, 2.6 cm high, dated to the Neolithic period, in the British Museum, registration number 2022,3034.64.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams New York, 21 March 2022, lot 237 Price: USD 62,812 or approx. A GE-TYPE SOFT-PASTE WASHER, QIANLONG MARK AND PERIOD Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. China, 1736-1795. Finely potted with rounded sides rising from a tapered foot to an incurved mouth encircled by a key-fret decorated rim, the exterior molded with lotus blossoms and foliage bordered by registers of archaistic scroll, covered overall with a thick ivory-white glaze suffused with an irregular network of dark and transparent crackle. The countersunk base impressed with a six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi and of the period.Provenance: From the estate of Stuart and Phyllis Moldaw. The collection featured a comprehensive range of early Chinese porcelain as well as a noted group of Buccelatti and Puiforcat silver. Stuart G. Moldaw (1927-2008) was a retail pioneer and billionaire who founded Ross Stores. He was also a generous philanthropist who served on the boards of several nonprofit agencies, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art,. President Bill Clinton appointed him as a public delegate to the U.S. Mission at the United Nations in 1993 and chairman of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars in 1996.Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, including glaze recesses, pitting and firing cracks. Few minor shallow chips to edges, occasional light scratches, few tiny hairlines to rim (probably inherent to firing).Weight: 982.7 gDimensions: Diameter 23 cm This rare brushwasher with a crackle-type glaze of a faint ivory tone stands as a refined example of Qianlong period archaism. Porcelains of this type, made in imitation of imperial Ding wares from the Song dynasty and clearly influenced by earlier bronze vessels, were prized by the Qianlong Emperor.Expert’s note: 'Soft-paste' porcelain has the addition of a powdered white clay to the porcelain body, which is called hua shi (slippery stone). This results in a lightweight ware that can be crisply molded and incised with intricate designs. It was significantly more expensive to produce than a standard kaolin porcelain body.Auction result comparison: Type: Near-identical Auction: Sotheby’s, Hong Kong, 7 April 2010, lot 1923 Price: HKD 200,000 or approx. AN UNUSUAL LOBED DING WARE ‘HIBISCUS’ BOX AND COVER, NORTHERN SONG TO JIN DYNASTY Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. Expert’s note: A distinctive aspect of the Ding kiln in Hebei province is that when placed underneath a very strong light, the white ware develops an orange hue, almost like a corona, especially where the ware is thinning, such as around the foot rim for example. This characteristic aspect makes objects from the Ding kilns easily identifiable and is due to the unique composition of the ware, which is mostly covered by a rather thick pale-ivory glaze. This ding box is also notable for its rather unusual shape for which we could not find any direct comparisons.China, c. 12th-13th century. The four-lobed square box stands on a short square foot with raised rim, and the cover is decorated with incision work, beading, and a central hibiscus flower medallion with four lines of beading extending from its petals.Provenance: From a private collection in the northeastern United States. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Signs of wear and light weathering, minuscule nicks to the edge of base and lid, expected firing flaws including several glaze recesses. The form slightly uneven overall.Weight: 106 g Dimensions: Width 7 cm Molded decoration on Ding wares was adopted in the latter part of the Northern Song dynasty and flourished during the Jin dynasty. The technique allowed the Ding potters to adopt more complex and also more formal designs. The molds used were meticulously crafted and similar to those used to cast decoration on gold and silver works of art.Literature comparison:Compare related a trefoil-shaped 'Ding' box, from the R.F.A. Riesco and Hans Popper collections, illustrated in Song Ceramics from the Hans Popper Collection, Eskenazi, London, 2005, pl. 17. Compare the shape of the present box with the shape of a brush washer, made in imitation of Ding ware, produced at the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen in southern China, c. 1680-1780, and inscribed by Emperor Qianlong, at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, C.44-1935. Also compare with another unusual lidded box with six applique roundels, Liaoning or Hebei province, Liao dynasty (916-1125), diameter 11.4 cm, in the Avery Brundage Collection, B60P1533.a-.b. Riesco和Hans Popper收藏,見《Song Ceramics from the Hans Popper Collection》,Eskenazi,倫敦,2005年,圖17。
