An 1803 Royal Naval officer’s sword, slender straight, fullered blade 28", etched and blued and gilt for two thirds length with crown, foliate and floral devices on one side, and crowned Royal Arms, stylized foliage and devices on the other, gilt stirrup hilt with crossguard and quillon, langets bearing crowned fouled anchor, pronounced knucklebow into flattened lion’s head pommel and backstrap with central feather panel, swollen, wirebound, chequered ivory grip, in its black leather (replaced) scabbard with gilt mounts and 2 rings, the locket with maker’s name “Salter, Sword Cutler, etc, to HRH the Duke of Sussex, 35 Strand London”. Very Good Condition for age, retaining approx 75% blueing and gilding to blade and 85% gilt to hilt and scabbard mounts (few rust patches to blade) Plate 19
An 1803 Royal Naval officer’s sword, slender, shallow diamond section blade 27½”, etched and blued and gilt for two thirds length with crown, GR cypher and stylized foliage on one side and trophy of arms in stylized foliage on the other, gilt stirrup hilt with crossguard engraved with foliate panels, pronounced knucklebow into flattened lion’s head pommel with flowing mane backstrap, slightly swollen wirebound chequered ivory grip, in its black leather (limp and fractured) scabbard with stylized foliate engraved locket, middle band and chape, 2 rings, the locket maker’s name “Salter, Sword Cutler and Jeweller to HRH the Duke of Sussex, 35 Strand London”. Very Good Condition for age, the blade retaining virtually all original finish, the hilt and scabbard mounts approx 60% gilt. Plate 19
A Georgian Naval officers hanger, flat, sharply curved blade 21", double edged towards point, lightly etched for half length on both sides with trophy of arms and foliate flourishes, gilt mounted hilt with flattened shallow S shaped crossguard, small chain link up to flattened lion’s head and mane pommel and backstrap, chequered ivory grip (crack to left side) in its polished leather scabbard with brass locket, middle band and chape, 2 rings, the locket engraved “Bond 45 Cornhill”. Good Condition retaining approx 40% gilt and traces to scabbard (a little light pitting to blade) Plate 20

A rare, early double-sided vellum figure depicting the infernal apparition Mephistopheles and the lovely Marguerite, who holds a prayer book and wears an ivory dress detailed in gilt. The inspiration was Henry Irving and Ellen Terry's roles of the same names in the play Faust. The figure may have in turn inspired a 1928 aquatint etching by the French artist Louis Icart (1880-1950), entitled Faust: Devil and Woman. The Vellum figures were made in limited quantities; all can be described as extremely rare. Gilt decoration throughout.
