19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Lady in white dress", miniature portrait study, oval, watercolour on ivory, unsigned, 3.5 cm x 3 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Sealed within frame, and back of frame glued on. Gilt mount is oval, but the frame aperture is circular, so frame appears to be matched / not original. Unable to inspect picture fully due to frame being sealed, but from surface inspection through the glass appears to have some fading, and a small mark near lower edge. Scuffs and scratches to frame.
ENGLISH SCHOOL "Lady in blue dress with hair in ringlets", miniature portrait study, oval, oil on ivory, unsigned, 7.5 cm x 6 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Sealed within frame and new paper to back of frame. Unable to inspect portrait fully, but when inspection through the glass it appears in reasonably good order, although the edges are visible within the aperture are are quite rough-cut. Aperture is slightly larger than the edges of the picture. Frame with wear, touch up paint, scuffs, craquelure.
A pair of late Victorian Royal Worcester blushware jugs with floral spray decoration and gilt embellishments, Rd. No. 29115/1094, date marked for 1896, 12.5 cm high, together with a modern blush ivory flat back jug, circa 2000, produced for the 250th Anniversary in 2001, 9.5 cm high. CONDITION REPORTS Middle size jug has a small pin head sized chip to foot, otherwise all with some slight wear but appear sound.
An ebony walking cane with ivory handle in the form of a greyhound's head with inset glass eyes, 92 cm long. CONDITION REPORTS Dog has some cracks and splits and some discolouration. There are holes to top of both ears where a previous fitting may have been located. Cane has some scratches but appears in reasonable condition, but may be a later replacement, and the tip of the cane appears to be a later replacement.
A 17th Century Indian sandalwood and ivory finial of fluted spherical form raised on an ebony hexagonal base decorated with stylised floral roundels, 23.5 cm high. CONDITION REPORTS Overall with quite a lot of dirt and dust. A split to the ivory embellishment around the sphere. Some splits and chips to finial and there is a small hole to the top of the finial where another fitment may once have been. Split to fluted sandal wood to base.
A pair of Victorian fish servers, the silver blades with engraved floral decoration and carved ivory handles with scrolling leaf and bead decoration (by Harrison Brothers and Howson, Sheffield, 1876). CONDITION REPORTS Both handles have wear, surface scratches, etc. conducive with age and use, similar to blades, fork prongs are slightly mis-shapen (see images for further details).
A 17th Century ivory handled knife, the handle carved in the form of a Middle Eastern figurehead wearing a turban in the form of a dog astride a knight's helmet, the blade marked "GV", together with a Continental white metal handled knife, the handle decorated with figural scenes in C scroll frames.
An 18th Century gilt metal chatelaine with all over repoussé work decoration of classical figures and scrolling acanthus, the clip supporting three various boxes, one as a necessaire containing a spoon, penknife, scissors, ivory tablet with pencil inscriptions, the other two as bonbonnieres/patch boxes, housed in a leather case a card inscribed "The words written on ivory tablet in this chatelaine are by Jane Falk whose parents opposed her marriage. She is supposed to have written and passed the tablet to her lover (afterwards her husband Captain John George Wordeman) with whom she ran away and married in Falmouth Parish Church 1763 March 11th). She died in 1775 at Riga, Russia. CONDITION REPORTS Has general wear and scratching all over conducive with age and use. One patch box has Roman tally marks scratched into it, necessaire bottom finial has a pin hole and two dents, case interior in a somewhat distressed state and exterior has wear, scratches, etc. conducive with age and use (see photos) please note that this is not gold, catalogue description now reads gilt metal. 17cm long. Gross weight approx 128g.
A 19th Century circular marble framed miniature on ivory depicting Dun Robin Castle (stormed in the Jacobite's Uprising) with domed verre eglomise glazing with gilt and white chequered decoration and foreground foliage painted on glass, inscribed verso "Dun Robin Castle 1627", 14 cm diameter.
A 19th Century Chinese carved ivory panel depicting figures in a garden with dog of fo, decorated with water lilies verso, raised on a carved wooden stand, 8.5 cm x 8 cm. CONDITION REPORTS The back is very yellowed conducive to age and general wear. On the top right corner of the back there is some cracking to the vine decoration (please see images). There is a small section of vine decoration missing on the right hand side about 0.5 cm long (please see images). There is also a small section missing off the bottom right corner approx 1.5 cm. There are some small minor nicks to the enamel work on the back. The front top corner flower is missing a small section to the edge approx 0.5 cm long. There is rubbing around the outer edge of the rim conducive to general wear to a flat sheen wearing out the decoration in places. All other three remaining flowers at the corner all have small nicks to their edges missing. The main decoration is in good order but with some order conducive to age and is slightly dirty throughout. The stand appears to have been made for the piece (possibly at a later date) - shows general signs of wear conducive to age. There is a small nick to the base of one foot approx 0.5 cm x 0.5 cm.
A 16th / 17th Century Venetian ivory mask of a lion mounted on a velvet covered board, size of lion mask approx 6 cm x 5 cm. CONDITION REPORTS Lion's forehead has three significant cracks to ivory, otherwise has general wear, scratches, etc. conducive with age and use, material in need of a good clean, is attached to its backboard (see photos).
A late 19th / early 20th Century Chinese carved ivory lidded box with pierced decoration depicting figures and pagodas in a landscape, and raised on four mask decorated feet, 8.75 cm x 6.75 cm. CONDITION REPORTS The lid has two small cracks in the outer frame on the outer edge of the pierced decoration running horizontally - each measuring just under 0.5 cm (please see images). Otherwise shows general wear conducive to age with some minor rubbing and minor scratches in places from general wear. The interior is dirty conducive to age. There is some slight yellowing generally from typical use and wear. The hinges appear sound. When the lid is shut it raises slightly to one side (please see image).
An 18th Century walnut chest, the quartered top with ivory parquetry work inlaid banding over two short and three long cross banded drawers on bun feet, 93 cm wide. CONDITION REPORTS 92.5 cm high excluding glass. Top is faded, there are numerous splits, dents, etc., top is warped, various ivory pieces have been replaced. Right-hand side panel has a large split running vertically all the way down approx. half way along, there are numerous other splits to the veneer and it has risen in one area, there are two pieces of patching on the cross banding, piece of moulding missing from the bottom right-hand corner, front has replacement escutcheons, the one on the right single drawer does not match, replacement handle on the left-hand single drawer, drawer front moulding below single drawers has a diagonal split approx. 45 cm along, there are areas of patching on the second and bottom long drawers, and the moulding underneath the second long drawer is very scratched, moulding to the base has a split and there is a section of veneer missing approx. a third along from the left-hand corner approx. 2.5 cm long, left-hand side has a split running vertically all the way down the central panel, there is an area of moulding missing to the back corner bottom, drawer linings have had alterations/replacements, locks have also been replaced, ball feet have wear, knocks, scratches, etc., generally all over has knocks, dents, scratches, etc. conducive with age and use, shows some signs of old woodworm (see photos for further details).
