A MEDIEVAL WALRUS IVORY DRAUGHTSMAN carved to illustrate Aesop's fable of the Fox and the Stork within a foliate border, the sides with four small leafy medallions, probably Northern France, second half of the 12th century; 5.75 cms wide Provenance: By descent from the Rev. Dr. James Elwin Millard (1823-1894) in whose collection this piece was recorded in 1873. At that time a copy was made by the South Kensington (later Victoria and Albert) Museum, cat.no. 827, which is still in the museum's collection. First published by I.O. Westwood in 1876 in the catalogue of Fictile Ivory Casts in the South Kensington Museum. Subsequently published by Adolph Goldschmidt in 1923, see p. 50, the piece at that time being recorded as lost.

A Geo naval dirk, slender DE blade 14”, with deep central fuller, slightly swollen ivory grip, with chequered panels on all 4 sides, gilt, upswept writhen crossguard with swollen terminals, grinning lion’s head pommel. Hilt GC, retaining much original gilt, blade retaining traces of gilt, but otherwise worn and deeply pitted. Plate 3
A 1786 style infantry officer’s sword, straight, fullered SE blade 32”, marked ‘J (J Run)kel (Unclear) Solingen’ on backstrap, etched in lightly scrolled panels on one side with trophy and crowned GR and on the other with trophy and crowned pre 1801 R Arms, copper gilt stirrup hilt with flat crossguard and quillon, with 2 sideloops, facetted knucklebow, stepped and facetted pommel, slightly swollen lined panelled ivory grip, in its black leather scabbard with gilt locket, middle band and chape, with 2 rings. GC for age, retaining approx 70% gilt (blade worn, with light pitting, scabbard leather some wear and a little limp).
An early Victorian Naval Volunteer’s dirk, plain, plated shallow diamond section blade 8”, elaborately turned ivory grip (very small crack at base), copper gilt crossguard, embossed with flowers on top, and lion’s head pommel cap, in its gilt sheath, with 2 rings, and engraved with a flower and foliate panels on the outer side. GC, retaining a little original gilt
A late 18th century naval dirk, shallow tapering diamond section blade, 7¾”, etched blued and gilt for two thirds length with stylized floral foliage, gilt crossguard deeply embossed with scrolled foliage on the top, tapering rectangular section ivory grip with chequered and shell panels, facing lion heads pommel, in its plain parcelled gilt sheath with stud tip and 2 rings. GC, retaining approx 50% original finish overall. Plate 3
A Georgian naval officer’s dirk, steeply curved flat blade 6½”, DE towards point, etched, blued and gilt overall with trophy of drum, cannon, standard and foliage on one side, and foliage on the other, copper gilt crossguard embossed with pineapple at each end on the top, swollen ribbed ivory grip, the pommel pierced for wrist-strap, in its plain gilt sheath with 2 rings. VGC for age, retaining approx 75% original finish (few small rust patches to right side of blade, 1¼” crack to grip). Plate 3
A late 18th Cent Naval officer’s dirk, slender diamond section blade 9½”, retaining a little foliate engraving, copper gilt forward facing crossguard embossed with oak leaf and acorns, ringed and writhen ivory grip with gilt middle band and pommel cap, in its gilt sheath, with single ring, engraved with stylized foliage on outer side. GC, retaining approx 20% gilt (small cracks and chip to grip, blade some wear).
A naval dirk c 1800, slender tapering blade 12¼”, with central fuller, plain brass crossguard with slightly swollen finials, swollen rectangular section ivory grip with flattened corners, plain pommel with stud to flat top, in its leather sheath with line engraved locket, middle band and chape, 2 rings and stud. GC
An unusual continental 5 shot 7mm open frame DA pinfire revolver, 7½” overall, octagonal barrel 4” with very tall sights to be visible above the hammer, stamped on the left side of the breech ‘Loron Brevete’, serial number 5733 and with lever which frees the barrel and cylinder to slide forward on the cylinder pin in order to facilitate loading and ejecting; the breech, cylinder, frame and grip straps foliate engraved, the cylinder with Liege proofs; with folding trigger and plain ivory grips. GWO & C retaining some original blued finish (small spring broken off from right side of frame, but present). Although Liege proved Loron father and son were French gunsmiths in St Etienne and Versailles. Plate 15
A late 18th century infantry officer’s spadroon of the 23rd Regiment, straight, fullered blade 32’, with faint traces of etching and retaining a little original blueing for one third length, gilt hilt with cross guard, quillon and sideloop, into slightly swollen knucklebow with small ring at the top, flattened octagonal section pommel cap and lined, slightly swollen ivory grip with gilt central band and oval engraved with the Prince of Wales’s Feathers and XXIII, in its leather (worn) scabbard with brass mounts and 2 rings, the locket engraved ‘R Clarke & Son, 62 Cheapside’. Good Condition, the hilt retaining approximately 85% original gilt. Plate 19
