A William IV Mameluke pattern Sword presented by Lord Cornwallis when Governor General of India to His Highness Gengadhar Manick, Majarajah of Aguvtolla in Jepperah. Given in 1816 to Meer Naseroodear Shemshi Khan as a gift after he saved the Majarajah from a Tiger. Obtained from the Khan family by Captain Richard Molesworth, Royal Dragoons and presented to Leigh Masonic Lodge in 1862 by Capt Molesworth. The hilt which was originally Ivory was repaired in 1958 by a member of the Lodge and replaced with wood. The sword has a curved 767mm long blade with an etched panel with the Crown and Cypher of GRIII with crossed sword and baton to both sides of the blade. Maker marked "FL Cater, 56 Pall Mall, London". Gilt crossguard. Complete with brass scabbard with two suspension rings. Overall length 915mm. Comes with a 1972 dated history of the Leigh Lodge which describes the provenance of the Sword. Used as the Tyler's Sword there since 1862.
