AN EARLY 18TH CENTURY RELIEF CARVED IVORY PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF ARENT FURLEY (Secretary to General Stanhope, 1708-1711, and the Earl of Peterborough in Spain) he died in 1705. Arent was the son of Benjamin Furley (1636-1714) Quaker, a friend of Fox, Penn and Locke. Arent is depicted in carved shallow relief, shoulder length bust profile, wearing a long powdered wig, a draped garment over plate armour, the arm is carved with the letters "I.M.?" possibly the sculptor, around the oval is carved the text ".A:FVRLY.NATVS.1685.AE TATIS.SVAE.XXIII.", the ivory panel is set into a mahogany frame bearing hand written label verso - Concerning Arent and his father Benjamin, ivory panel - 10.5cm x 8.5cm
