HERGE: (1907-1983) Georges Prosper Remi. Belgian Cartoonist, creator of The Adventures of Tintin. An excellent original black pen and ink drawing signed and inscribed by Herge, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. To the blank verso of what is most likely a page neatly removed from a book (a series of printed images are just visible to the recto) Herge has drawn charming images of the heads of his most famous characters, Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy (who holds a bone in his mouth). Signed (‘Herge’) in bold black ink and with a brief inscription in French. A rare and desirable signed drawing. Matted in ivory and framed and glazed in a plain silver coloured wooden frame to an overall size of 13 x 11. EX
DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish Author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. An unusual original pen and ink drawing, unsigned, by Doyle to the verso of his personal printed correspondence card, Windlesham, Crowborough, Sussex, n.d. Doyle’s drawing is entitled The Quiet Home in the Forest and depicts a fight between two animals (presumably hounds) taking place in a tree lined country field with seven individuals running towards them, most armed with various implements in an effort to stop the fight. From one individual Doyle has drawn a speech bubble with the holograph text ‘Hi! Do something! Do anything! Hit ‘em! Kick ‘em! Pull their tails!’. Matted in ivory and framed and glazed to both sides (to show Doyle’s printed name and address on the recto of the correspondence card) in a black frame to an overall size of 9.5 x 8. VG Provenance: The present sketch was originally sold as part of lot 131 by Christie’s in their sale of The Conan Doyle Collection in London on 19th May 2004. The lot of over twenty drawings and paintings realised £7170.
The Speaking Picture Book. A New Picture Book with Characteristical Voices, Made in Germany, For Sale by F.A.O. Schwarz, New-York, [1881?], eight chromolithographed pages, with relating poems, a few minor marks and spots, first illustration with minor surface loss to lower right corner, first poem with pale mark across left side, each page with corresponding "pull" to activate a sound effect (final page with two "pulls"), the mechanism concealed within a book-form box, the top and bottom edges of pierced wood gilt, original decorative cloth-covered boards, a few minor marks (mainly to lower board), turned ivory finials to the pulls, 4to (Qty: 1)Osborne I page 420. The sounds produced are that of the cock, the donkey, the lamb, the birds, the cow, the cuckoo, the goat, and mamma and papa. Unusually, this copy is complete with all the original ivory finials, and all the voices working, with the item in very good condition having not suffered a reback as is often the case. Haining calls this 'the pièce de résistance of any collection of moveables' and adds that very few complete and fine copies have 'survived youthful hands.' (Haining, Moveable Books, pp.136/7)
Ivory silk boned bodice, circa 1880. Possibly the top half of a wedding trousseau as in immaculate condition. 3/4 length sleeves edged with ivory open loop gimp and tassels. Box pleated silk ruffles around arms and the neckline continuing down to the net lined, crenelated waistband. Hook and eye fastening along stomacher. Provenance: The Penrose Estate, Porthleven, Cornwall. From a basket of very high quality linens with a hand written label: 'Hand made by Lady Basset of Tehidy'. Very fine, would appear to have been virtually unworn. Provenance: The Penrose Estate, Porthleven, Cornwall
Three heavy linen pillow shams with central crocheted panel inserts surrounded by three rows of fine openwork embroidery in cream silks. One sham with further large crocheted panel on open end, the other similar but smaller in size. Together with two small fine linen 18thcentury sampler panels, the smaller (33x17.5cm) with four rows of openwork, the larger (61x20 cm) almost entirely filled with rows of fine embroidery utilising multiple techniques, mostly white thread but one blue and red. An alphabet at one end. 'S B' in cross stitch at the other (This would be Sarah Bishop, an ancestor of the Rogers family). A large panel of crochet (82x105cm). A small fine lawn pillow sham (32x43cm) with central open work panel, edged with the same design and with finely embroidered leaf motifs (damage to the fabric on reverse). An ivory quilted fringed cradle blanket (28x37cm). Also fine lawn handkerchief embroidered with an ornate 'C' in cream silk, in good condition but some staining. Provenance: The Penrose Estate, Porthleven, Cornwall.
Brocade silk dress. Ivory silk richly embroidered with brightly coloured floral sprays of stylised roses, lilies and bluebells. The bodice has been separated from the skirt. The short sleeved, boned bodice with white silk lining with lacing in the back, has been altered in several places. Cream fabric has been crudely inserted front and back (could be easily removed). The skirt is open sided and reinforced with a kind of buckram; it was originally lined in pink silk that has now deteriorated. It has also been altered and crudely re-hemmed. Amongst the linens in this collection are various hand written labels, one of which reads "Brocade dress worn in 17th century by Mrs Hugh Rogers". Ann Bishop married Hugh Rogers in 1746. Hugh Rogers bought the Penrose Estate in the mid 1700s. Assuming the label refers to this brocade dress, (17th century is a mistake and it should read 18th) it would make the dress early to mid 18th century. It has been much altered and probably would have consisted of an additional petticoat and longer sleeves. The fabric, although not exactly the same, nicely matches the brocade shoes in lot 3203 which bear a label dating them 1722. The floral silk has deteriorated in some places but generally the integrity of the frock is good.Provenance: The Penrose Estate, Porthleven, Cornwall. (See illustration)

Four plain lawn chemises, two seem unworn, one other with frilled sleeves and embroidered front panel. Two square pillow shams.
