Haji Jalili Prayer Rug Iranian Azerbaijan, late 19th century The madder field with two lions flanked by columns beneath the Mihrab centred by a hanging lamp, the upper ivory spandrels with a lattice of floral vines enclosed by ivory, leaf and flowerhead borders, flanked by triple meandering vine guard stripes, 186cm by 132cm See illustration The Property of a Gentleman In the late 19th century some of the finest rugs and carpets made in Iran came from the town of Marand some 40 miles north West of Tabriz. The workshops owned by one Haji Jalili produced a small number of outstanding weavings. These rugs and carpets remain much sort after today. Kashan Rug Central Iran, circa 1930 The ivory field of flowering vines around an indigo pole medallion framed by spandrels and deep indigo borders of palmettes and meandering scrolling vines flanked by carnation guard stripes, 208cm by 127cm The Property of a Gentleman Weaving in Kashan originated hundreds of years ago. During the 20th century rugs such as this example were rightly prized throughout the Western world for the excellency of their weave, lustrous wool and dye qualityBoth ends probably missing outer blue plain guard stripe. Fine Kashgai Rug South West Iran, 19th century The abrashed sky blue field with numerous flowers, flowerheads and serrated leaves around an ivory stepped octagon framed by madder spandrels and narrow borders of angular meandering vines flanked by further borders and barbers' poles, the ends with chevron bands, 270cm by 153cm See illustration The Property of a Gentleman The Kashgai were the largest and most powerful tribe of South West Iran. They were refined tribal weaves. The weavers have used excellent vegetable dye and fine lustrous wool in the making of this rugOne end retaining parts of the web. Both ends with tassels fraying and nibbled into the corners of the piled areas. Original selvedges but fraying. Pile generally good, minor line of rucking approx 10cm. 120517
Giovanni Antonio Gualterio (Rome, act.1582-1620): An Ivory of Christ Crucified, monogrammed and dated 1613, 31cm high, on a later cross with ivory plaque and attendant saints on a reliquary base See illustration For a similar example monogrammed and dated 1585 see Sotheby's, 10.12.15, lot 386. Another similar example is recorded dated 1614 and these form part of a group of similar sculptures produced for various clients including Cardinal Fernando de Medici, other examples are in the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden, the Duke of Riva's Collection in Madrid, and in a private collection in Paris.
