Lot 4122

An Elegant Mid-19th Century Ivory Folding Parasol, the good black Chantilly lace cover with scalloped edge attractively overhanging the cream lining. Designed with central meandering stems and leaves, the cover features eight floral sprays leading to ovals and swags, with flowers and leaves to the border. The lower shaft carving features 5 narrow bands and a bulbous end in four segments. The finial has a small ring for ribbon or other decoration. Height 24.75 inches or 63cm. Cover depth 12.75 inches or 32.5cm. Together with a second mid-19th century folding parasol, the upper shaft of light wood, the ivory lower section quite simply carved. The lace cover, which has been re-lined, would most likely fit a larger frame, but has been elegantly gathered at the crown. The design, of large roses above smaller flower clusters, finishes in a scalloped edge, large flowers alternating with leaves (2) CONDITION REPORT: . First parasol, please note a slight curve to the lower, ivory shaft. The upper shaft is pale wood. An odd tiny hole noted in the net ground. Replacement lining is strong. The second parasol is lined in a strong mustard to set off the design, with a further black lining within. One split in the net noted up next to the top of the crown, and two or three on the border. Otherwise the cover feels crisp and sound.

A Good Brussels Bobbin Appliqué Lace Folding Parasol, the motifs mounted on black silk. Lined in cream silk. The frame, of ivory, is carved from the end to the central point where the brass ring covers the hinging mechanism. The floral carving, quite deep, is designed to meander around the lower section. Lined in fine cream silk with good working action, and no splits to the silk. Overall length when extended, approx. 22.75 inches or 58cm CONDITION REPORT: . In very good order.

Lot 4125

A Rare Parasol with Beaded Cover, circa 1850's, the shaft of tan wood, the ribs of metal, the finial and cap ivory. Lined and finished with tiered and ruched cream silk, the edges scalloped, the cover, with a very English design of oak leaves, is itself lined in cream silk. The tiny beading is worked with a quite opaque, shiny background, and a regular, quite geometric design as border decoration, inside of which meander oak leaves in various shades of green and black. Length from tip to end of shaft 25.25 inches or 64cm. Cover depth 11 inches or 28cm to include the silk. Not a folding carriage parasol CONDITION REPORT: . : Beadwork in very good condition and with good, good colour. The very end of the shaft is missing. The secondary lining of cream silk is shattered.

Lot 4132

Four Fine and Unusual Miser's or Stocking Purses, from a large collection to follow those included in this sale. The first, c 1850, is of a very fine-gauge cream net, beaded along the opening and in two areas of the body, with the tiniest gold beads, and finished at each end with a larger brown bead and loops of the gold examples. Overall length 10 inches or 25.5cm. Next, a cream thread purse with open lattice design, each crossing point featuring a minute gold bead. The ends each feature a quite plain and rounded dull gold button (perhaps a boot button) and each section is secured with a cream ring of either ivory or bone. Length 7.75 inches or 19.5cm. Thirdly, a very fine stocking purse, featuring pink, green and yellow flowers within pale blue rectangles, two yellow bands next to the opening, all against a dark brown background. Each end is finished with an embossed cup holding loops of tiny gold beads. Finally, a larger example worked in bands of olive green and pink, the sections secured with bone rings, the ends finished with a gold metal pendulous flower head. Length 10 inches or 25.5cm (4) CONDITION REPORT: . Generally sound, some staining on item 1, which lacks closure loops. The third purse lacks one closing ring and one point of slight damage noted.

A Shaped Early 19th Century Chinese Export Black Lacquer Sewing Workbox, decorated in gold, the sides undulating, the scalloped lid divided into nine panels with different scenes of people at leisure. Fitted with a wooden lift-out tray divided into small compartments, two of which have black lacquer lids decorated in gold. The compartments contain some sewing items that may be original, and several others: To include four wafer thin tortoiseshell thread winders, ivory pincushions, thread holders, spool barrels, a stiletto with bird to the tip, a small bone clamp with pincushion. The lower unfitted compartment contains a good quantity of bone and ivory hooks, stilettos, and other tools and parts of tools. Key present. Approximately 11 inches or 28cm, by 8 inches or 20.5cm by 3.5 inches or 9cm deep CONDITION REPORT: . The box lacks feet, the lacquer is chipped and cracked in places, particularly near the keyhole and the back-right corner.

A Mid-19th Century Sewing Companion of handbag form, in tan leather, with metal frame. The royal blue silk interior, ruched at the sides, is fitted with a mirror to one side and loops for tools to the base, containing bone and ivory needle cases, stilettos and hooks. Height 4.5 inches or 11.5cm. Together with a smaller tan leather sewing companion, with concertina base, cord handle with tassels, embossed gold metal frame, the interior fitted for tools to one side containing a bone shuttle, hook and stilettos), and a drawstring glazed cotton bag to the other side (2) CONDITION REPORT: . first bag, exterior leather is scuffed, the mirror is pitted and the silk around it a little soiled. When the lid is open the back spine is noted as splitting. Smaller bag, a brown stain to the exterior.

A 19th Century Sewing Set, contained in a green velvet box with silk to the inside lid and velvet to the tray, the exterior corners fitted with gold metal panels in a floral design. Inside, a set of “egg eyed sewing needles” and various miscellaneous hooks and stilettos, in bone and ivory, eleven items in all. Together with a French patented crochet set in a patterned cardboard box, with a pull-out concertina pattern pamphlet fixed into the lid, and various tools contained in the base, including a small hook with mother of pearl handle. N Alexandre et Cie Editeurs, rue St Martin, 241 PARIS; a dark green leather crochet set, the exterior tooled and coloured in gold, blue and red. Fitted inside for tools (incomplete) (3) CONDITION REPORT: . First item: box contents consist of unmatched items, wear to the velvet on the box exterior. Crochet set in good order.

The lid interior, lined in ginger silk satin, is fitted with a shaped and bevelled mirror. Next, a small fabric covered shelf fitted for tools (some present). The padded base is void for work in progress. Offered with an ivory twist top fitted case containing a stiletto and fittings; a miniature ivory brush and comb; a circular carved ivory container, a plain bone pincushion, an ivory pincushion carved with ivy leaves and berries; a mother of pearl thread spool; a spool holder with carved mother of pearl top; and a 19th century ivory pincushion in the shape of a Lyre, the ivory carved and pierced (9) CONDITION REPORT: . the leather on the upper corner at the back of the Companion is lifting slightly. Other items generally in good order.

A Chinese Carved and Pierced Ivory Brisé Fan (or possibly good quality bone?), 19th century, Qing Dynasty, elaborately carved throughout with tiny flowers and leaves surrounding a central carved shield, a formal border enclosing this section and the design repeating on the upper sticks and guards. Two guards and twenty-two inner sticks, all wedge-shaped. Contained in a card fan box with "L.J. Bellander (?) & Co Boston - New York" Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm. Together with a Chinese carved ivory fan, 19th century, the guards deeply carved with a dragon, the gorge lightly incised recto/verso with a shaped cartouche featuring figures. The cream leaf, of cotton gauze, is embroidered in cream silk with a dragon with three (?) claws. Guard length 8 and 5/8 inches or 22cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . First fan, ribbon sound. Several losses to the carving, in two areas to the tips, and one stick is damaged in two places. Fan 2 is in good order.

Lot 4224

A Good Chinese Mandarin Fan, circa 1860's, contained in a black lacquer fan box, the lid exterior painted in gold with stylised trees, two figures at leisure, and butterflies. The interior of the lid is delicately painted blue on paper, featuring a bird, pink glowers and fruits, and the base is fitted with pink card. The fan, with wood monture lacquered in black and several shades of gold, featuring a terrace scene with several people, insects and flowers, has a double paper leaf with differing scenes recto/verso. To one side, an outside gathering in various groups, the figures with applied painted ivory faces and applied silk for their robes. To the verso, three different waterside scenes, strong blues and greens for the central cartouche, much paler colours used for the two side vignettes, all featuring people wearing detailed robes in different colours. The reserves, in pale pink and green, feature different fruits, fish and birds. A small metal loop is fitted with a silk tassel in cream and maroon. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm CONDITION REPORT: . the fan is in good clean order with slight rubbing to the folds but generally a strong leaf that has not required repair. The box has one or two small chips to the exterior but again is in good condition for age. The clasp closes firmly.

Lot 4225

The Chinese Tea Ceremony: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the slender monture of ivory, the only decoration being to the upper guards, where a lightly carved border encloses various motifs carved withing three panels. The double paper leaf, with detailed painting in strong colours, shows a family gathered outdoors to take tea, a teapot and cup placed in the centre, a patterned low table to the left. Within a background of colourful, stylised flowers, one person is occupied reaching into a tree. One of the ladies carries either a fixed fan or mirror, one boy carries a spear. Some sections of the robes worn appear to be silk applied to the leaf. The verso is simply painted with flowers. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . One gorge stick is detached by present, the leaf slightly torn there this section has moved. Good strong colours.

A Large Qing Dynasty Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, circa 1850, the two guards deeply carved with pagodas, figures and stylised trees, the eighteen inner sticks lightly carved recto/verso in a similar fashion, the stick tips curved. A shaped gold metal loop is fitted with a thin cream silk tassel. Guard length 9 inches or 23 cm. Together with a large carved and pierced bone brisé fan of the tea ceremony type, with regular design, two guards and fifteen inner sticks. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Ivory fan, a few inner sticks very slightly warped as seen when closed. The tassel is a/f. Bone fan, some loss to one stick, some brown marking and possibly 2 sticks missing when examining the design.

A Good Small Chinese Carved Ivory Fan, circa 1840's, Qing Dynasty, the two guards deeply carved, the nineteen inner sticks less so but better than some, the design of pagodas, people undertaking daily activities throughout, both guards featuring a figure holding a fan. Light carving to the verso. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm CONDITION REPORT: . Good, one tip lacking one of two tiny slivers.

Lot 4228

A Small Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, circa 1810, Qing Dynasty, the wedge-shaped sticks carved with an unusual clarity and finesse. Sadly, missing a major section of the upper guard, the lower guard is carved with a man and boy to the tip, trees, clouds and a figure carrying a staff (?) to the lower section. The main body of the fan, with twenty-three sticks, features large figures involved in varying activities: A couple, seated at a table to the left, outside a building shaded with blossoms; next to a stylised tree, two male figures one possibly seeking directions; and a man greeting an arrival by boat, the boatman paddling, the far right of the fan filled with buildings, shelters with pagoda roofs, trees and people in differing costume. The tips all contain a single figure, each occupied in different activities, defined by the different objects carried. The verso is uncarved. Contained in a fitted box of pasteboard covered in brocade the pink interior lid bearing an oval paper label for Luenchun (?). Guard length 7 inches or 18cm CONDITION REPORT: . Good other than the lack of most of the upper guard. A few slivers missing to several tips and perhaps two areas in the lower section. Some very slight yellowing to the upper right. Ribbon sound. Box in good order but note it is shaped for a round tipped fan.

Lot 4233

An Unusual 19th Century Chinese Qing Dynasty Pierced and Painted Ivory Brisé Fan, with twenty-one inner sticks and two guards. The upper guards are designed with floral or shell-like forms, painted in blue, green and red. The lower sections are plain, but elaborately shaped to complement the gorge, ending in a shaped head that forms an elaborate fan when open and good shaping when the fan is seen from the side. The upper sticks are pierced in three sections, each of which shows an outdoor scene of robed oriental figures with animals, flowers and a gold, lidded urn. Between the scenes, the sticks are pierced or painted with delicate lattice designs. A bright red silk ribbon and many gold highlights bring further strong colour. The verso is plain. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . Very good.
