An Anglo-Indian Carved Sandalwood and Elephant Ivory Chess Set, circa 1820, each with petalette circular domed base and multiple knop, and various carved and engine turned detail, the sandalwood pieces with both knights missing, contained in two ivory veneered sandalwood boxes with black pigment decorated engraved bandings, 22cm wide Box 1 - large portion of right hand veneer missing and piece not retained. Bad splitting and shifting of veneers and discolouration. Splitting of the basal boards. Later textile insert. Box 2 - two loose sections of lid veneer (both retained). Further lifting of veneers and general cracking and rubbing. Hinged lid detached and cracked. Later textile insert. Basal boards cracked. a/f. Wooden chess set - lacking both knights. King has a section of the finial cross missing (piece not retained). Queen with chunk out of crown finial. One bishop finial chipped. Ivory set - both knights with horse head section finials reglued, one reglued at the base of the main stem. Queen reglued towards the top of the stem. One bishop top section detached and also chipped on the fringed peak. Due to the complexity of these pieces not all faults are necessarily contained within this description. Prospective purchasers must examine them more close for other defects. Sold a/f. 310513
Attributed to Spoilum, Chinese, circa 1808: Front view of the factories or buildings appropriated for the use of foreign merchants at Canton in China (Hongs) - view of the main frontage with six flags displayed, including USA, Britain, France, Sweden, with numerous Chinese junks and trading vessels in the foreground View of the Bocca Tigris on the entrance to the River Tigris in the Southern Coast of China and about 50 miles from the city of Canton - Chinese and European trading vessels near ports Both with extensive ink inscriptions verso (as above), the latter inscribed J Spoilum pinxt Canton 1808, oil on metal or ivory?, 9cm by 12.5cm, in period black lacquered papier mâché frames with star repeat patterned ormolu mounts, rings for suspensions, 17.3cm by 20.8cm overall (2) Both have not been examined out of the frames so no guidance can be given to the borders/edges. Both have dust and tiny flakes of paint trapped between the glass and surface. No cracks or obvious chips or pieces missing from the edged as viewed within the frames. Black lacquered papier mâché frames have typical minute crackelure and stress cracks throughout. The Bocca Tigris view has a different suspension ring from the Hongs example (an acorn and leaf terminal) and textured ring. The Bocca Tigris example is a cruder later plain example. Both have ink inscriptions which are clearly visible. The Hongs example has two flakes on the left upright of the glazing. Metalware on both slightly tarnished and with tiny angle dents/chips. 210513
