Y A late Regency or George IV tortoiseshell veneered, ivory mounted and metal strung octagonal tea caddy, circa 1820, of bombe outline, the hinged cover opening to reveal two conforming subsidiary covers, on ball feet, 15cm high, 16cm wideCondition Report: The caddy bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use. There are a couple of very minor chips, losses and repairs to the veneer, which shows some slight natural pitting and warping in areas. Particularly the rear panel, which looks glossier. The hinge there sits at a slight angle and not entirely flush with its aperture. There are some cracks and restorations to the ebony banding within, and the velvet and paper interior shows the usual minor wear and tear. There is some discolouration to the ivory feet, which were possibly later re-fastened. The feet aren't entirely straight.Overall, in perfectly presentable condition.Key present. Condition Report Disclaimer
Y A French or Italian gouache, paper and ivory mounted fan, late 18th century, the leaf painted with a figural scene, probably representing 'Mars disarmed by Venus', before an architectural background and with further figures, the openwork sticks carved with foliage and trophies, with parcel gilt guard, presented in a giltwood case, 34cm high, 59cm wide overall; a French painted and sequin embroidered parchment, silk inset and mother-of-pearl mounted fan, late 18th/early 19th century, painted with a shepherdess and trophies in reserves, signed H Verremin (?) to the leaf, 42cm fully extended; a Victorian painted silk and mother-of-pearl mounted fan, late 19th century, the lace-trimmed leaf painted with birds, 64cm wide fully extended; a Victorian lace and papier mache mourning fan, third quarter 19th century; and four various feather fans, early 20th century, including three ostrich feather court fans with tortoiseshell sticks and guardsCondition Report: All fans in the lot bear the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall commensurate with age, use and wear. The large gouache fan has not been inspected outside of its case. It bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use. There are some small losses to the paint, including a circa 0.5cm area by the basket of flowers (possibly a small restoration here), the top right corner of the leaf, and to the edges of the gilt borders where they meet the sticks. There is also some minor ripping and tearing to this area, and creasing along the top and folds. The surface has probably been retouched/restored in one or two places, including to the lowermost portion of the left scene below the river god on the left guard, and also possibly to the central portion of the sky where the paint looks slightly darker and thicker, and above the armour to the upper edge. One of the sticks has a loss of openwork carving to the top, and there are losses to the dark paint in the recesses of the guard. The giltwood case is chipped to the edges.Overall the fan has remained quite well preserved. The embroidered paper fan has four broken sticks to the left side, and a loss of one stick to the rear. The two larger fabric vignettes are torn in places, primarily the one on the left. The mother-of-pearl mounted bird fan has some marks and one or two of the guards are loose (though could presumably be reattached). The mourning fan is lacking one stick and has some losses to the painted finish of the frame. The feather fans each have three or four damaged/broken sticks or leaves. Condition Report Disclaimer
