Josef Karl Stieler 1781-1858, Portrait Miniature- A young woman, bust-length in an Italianate courtyard wearing a green dress, her hair curled and holding a bible, opaque colour on ivory, signed, 5.5x6.5cm: to include seven further early 20th century miniatures by and after various hands to include examples depicting possibly a European Royal couple; Napoleon Bonaparte and other young ladies and gentlemen, (8) Note: Joseph Karl Stieler taught in the Parisian atelier of Francois Gerard, a student of Jacques-Louis David. In 1808, he established himself as an independent painter. In 1816, he travelled to Vienna to paint the portrait of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Between February and April 1820, he worked on his portrait of Ludwig Ludwig van Beethoven which is the most well-known representation of the composer today.
