A Chinese painted and inscribed ivory fan, signed Liao Ting and dated wu shen the 34th year of the Guangxu Period, (1908),finely painted in ink and colours to the one side with peonies in yellow and white, the reverse with a long poetical inscription in ink on gilt paper, supported on twenty-two ivory sticks terminating in pierced trellis and diaper work, the guard sticks carved with retreats and flowers,each stick 28.5cm long, framed and glazedThe text refers to various excerpts from chapter 29 of a book of poems titled Hai Yu Wen Zheng compiled by the Qing scholar and official Shao Songnian (1848-1920s), which was published in1905 and relates primarily to Daoism, landscapes, and the natural scenery.

There are dents to the handle, including two close together where the handle meets the top of the body, also there is a ‘pin’, replacement in the lower part of the handle joining it through the ivory heat stop. The handle hinge is good, lid closes well, no visible nasty repairs. The hallmarks are deeply struck in the base and the dents are visible on the inside of the base.
