Tabriz pictorial rug with inscriptions, north west Persia, early 20th century, 4ft. 3in. X 2ft. 7in. 1.30m. X 0.79m. Slight wear in places; small repair to centre. The ivory field closely filled with small boteh around a central figure in the countryside by a pond holding aloft a Zoroastrian emblem, the dark blue main border with regal portraits and inscriptions in cartouches either side of the central figure; lions, other animals and birds in cartouches in the main border; pale blue floral outer guard.

The field composed of dark green and purple chequered design within a brocaded border of triangles in ivory and dark brown with fringing to all sides. Light red field with central dark blue/purply central medallion with ivory inner medallion; ivory, pale blue and dark blue-purply spandrels; all over flowers and foliage repeated in the dark blue/purply main border with pale blue and ivory floral guards. In good pile with robust handle.

The yellow field with all over stars within a terracotta and pale blue lattice; a small flowering plant to left side centre; wide ivory main border of serrated edge medallions in various colours; dark brown diagonal leaf guards and terracotta and pale green reciprocal medachyl outer guard. In good pile with lustrous wool, vibrant palette and soft handle. Cf. Bennett, I. Op. Cit. P. 142, pl. 155 for a very similar example.

Yomut Turkmen ensi, Turkmenistan, early 20th century, 5ft. 8in. X 5ft. 1.73m. X 1.52m. Slight wear in places with corrosion to browns; small spots of repiling. The four panels woven with the pekvesh motif within a terracotta medallion main border enclosed by ivory syrga-pattern guards on all four sides; the lower wide elem with two bands of the Yomut 'fir' tree design. Soft palette and soft handle.

Minimal wear; narrow vertical strips of repiling to lower end; other small repairs and crease marks in places. Ivory field with all over floral motifs; a coffee pot in each corner; ivory latchhook main border; wide brown guards of geometric motifs; the flatweave ends very finely brocaded. The second a prayer rug, 5ft. x 2ft. 11in. 1.52m. x 0.89m. Slight wear; slight loss to ends. The apricot mihrab with stylized tree of life repeated in the hand panels at the top; narrow borders. Together with a machine made rug of Ghiordes prayer rug design. (3)
Bordjalou Kazak prayer rug, south west Caucasus, late 19th century, 4ft. 4in. X 3ft. 4in. 1.32m. X 1.02m. Repairs to small crease marks to sides. Rich terracotta mihrab with two dark blue lozanges and two pale green lozenges in the field with filler ornaments of flowerheads and four animals at the lower end. The prayer arch with an ivory cartouche with a date 1312 (AH) [1894 AD] with a 9 either side; ivory main border of foliate X motifs in a variety of colours; dark brown trailing vine outer border. An exquisite little rug with lustrous wool in a rich and vibrant palette; soft handle. Cf. Bennett, I. Oriental Rugs, Vol. 1. Caucasian, p. 65, pl. 49 for a Bordjalou Kazak of similar format. Nejafabad carpet with a later inset inscription for Seirafian, Esfahan district, south west Persia, circa 1930s-40s 12ft. 11in. X 8ft. 6in. 3.94m. X 2.59m. Slight wear in places. Ivory cartouche shape field with light red and pale blue centre medallion, surrounded by arabesques of flowers and foliage; light red and dark blue spandrels; wide light red floral main border within ivory and dark blue floral guards; the outer dark blue guard with a later inset panel at the lower end inscribed Seirafian, Esfahan.
Ladik prayer rug, central Anatolia, second half 19th century, 4ft. 4in. X 2ft. 11in. 1.32m. X 0.89m. Overall wear, heavier in some places; small holes and repairs; losses to ends. The field panelled and with tulip motifs each end within prayer arches; narrow ivory rosette borders divided by a narrow pale blue ribbon border. Soft palette and soft handle.

Dark blue serrated edge field with ivory centre medallion with the Qashqa'i emblem; the field with a variation of the herati design and various comical birds; the corners alternately pale blue and ivory with jewelled boteh motifs and small birds; rosettes and flowers; triple narrow borders in caramel, ivory and terracotta with small variously coloured boteh motifs; chequered ends. Very finely woven with close clipped velvety wool; rich palette and soft handle.

Pale green mihrab with pale blue spandrels above the arch and rectangular panels at the base filled with pale pink floral motifs; dark brown floral inner border; narrow pale pink and ivory floral guards and pale green flowerhead and leaf outer border.
