Fragment of a Kurdish long rug, possibly Shaqaqi Kurds, Karaja district, north west Persia mid 19th century, 4ft.9in. x 4ft. 1.45m. x 1.22m. Slight even wear overall. This is a fragment of an exceptional Karaja rug; for a discussion of the possible attribution to the Shaqaqi Kurds, see Burns, Antique Rugs of Kurdistan, pp. 204 ff. Particularly noteworthy is the very beautifully rendered version of the 'bird' pattern main border; in his discussion of this border on a rug he attributes to northern Kurdistan (pl. 70), Burns suggests that the more avian characteristics apparent on his rug, in contrast to other pieces in his collection, indicate an early date. However, such observations are a little dubious, especially as weavers would often exaggerate a particular motif to please merchants and other potential buyers; in this instance, the avian characteristics seen on our fragment, particularly the 'heads', are more marked than on the Burns rug but we would hesitate to date it to the 18th century as a result. Our fragment has an all-wool foundation of white warps and red wefts and a superb palette of twelve colours Ð dark brown, mid brown, tan brown, aubergine, red, salmon, pink, dark blue, mid blue, turquoise, pale yellow and ivory.
