A 19th Century French carved ivory and silver desk seal, the handle carved as a bouquet of roses, the silver head chased with scrolls and foliage, the silver matrix engraved, 13 cm longOverall in good condition. Possibly some small chips to the edges of the petals and leaves however this is probably part of the design. Some tarnishing to the silver and light scratches. No apparent cracks or restoration. Would benefit from a clean. Unfortunately we are unable to provide a CITES certificate with his lot. A Cantonese ivory box of rectangular form, decorated with typical designs of Manchu/Chinese figures in garden landscapes, 24.5 x 9.5 x 8 cm, Qing DynastySimilar boxes seem to have been manufactured for a variety of purposes, finding use as needlework containers and tea caddies. Comparable examples mostly appear to date from the first half of the 19th Century. See for example Nos. She was the sister-in-law of John Montgomery of Trinidad. Her name appears on a list of people who had an address in Scotland and were awarded compensation for slaves they owned.
