AN INTERESTING ENGLISH GOTHIC STYLE CARVED IVORY TRIPTYCH, 19TH CENTURY. This finely carved triptych would appear to be based on the mural painting in the Chichester Cathedral, Chichester, England, West Sussex by Lambert Barnard (1485-1567) as commissioned by Bishop Robert Sherburne in the first part of the 16th century, and later reproduced in print (1807). It depicts the 7th century Wessex King Caedwalla, shown at right on the central panel wearing crown and holding a scepter, confirming rights and territories to Bishop Saint Wilfrid, depicted at left with halo and tonsure and on the same arched central panel. The left wing depicts the Bishop’s entourage, holding his mitre and crosier and the right wing depicts the king’s attendants. Carved in high relief with good proportions, perspective and detailing and later set in a hinged wooden frame with solid back. Height of ivory 12.25 inches (30.5 cm). Overall dimensions 13.6 x 8.75 inches (open) (34.4 x 22 cm).

A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CARVED IVORY GOTHIC STYLE VIRGIN AND CHILD, PROBABLY 19TH CENTURY. Carved in full round from a single tusk, the elegant sway of the Virgin`s pose following the natural curve of the tusk. Carved with deep folds, good proportions and cascading hair. The crowned Virgin holds the infant Christ who looks lovingly at his mother and holds an apple in his right hand symbolizing the fruit of paradise that became the cause of Adam`s fall. Resting on a stepped oak base with overhanging ledge, height of carved ivory 22.7 inches (57.5 cm) Overall height including base 27.75 inches (70.5 cm). A stunningly beautiful carving.In Judeo/Christian tradition, the term Ivory Tower is a symbol for noble purity. It originates with the Song of Solomon (7:4) ("Your neck is like an ivory tower"; in the Hebrew Masoretic text, it is found in 7:5) and was included in the epithets for Mary in the sixteenth century Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary ("tower of ivory", in Latin Turris eburnean), though the title and image was in use long before that, since the 12th century Marian revival at least.

A VERY FINE PAIR OF CARVED IVORY PLAQUES, GERMAN, 17TH CENTURY. On the left Saint Ignatius of Loyola adoring the Trinity above him, and trampling Satan who tumbles beneath him. Masterfully carved in high relief with good anatomy, proportions, deep folds and fine detailing. The book held by Ignatius inscribed in Latin with the Jesuit motto, Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam. The ivory satin ground worked with colored silks and silver metallic threads with details of beads and pearls.
