A Chinese Canton carved ivory cup and ball game, late 19th / early 20th century, the tapered carved and pierced handle with birds amidst flowering prunus above rockwork, the ball in pale grey crackle glazed pottery, the handle and cup 5 1/8in. (13cm.) long., *Condition: Several small natural hairline cracks to cup. No damage to ivory carving. Good overall with glossy finish to outside of ivory carving from handling.

A Japanese carved ivory okimono of a farmer and boy, Meiji period (1868-1912), the farmer seated on a wooden bench with the boy beside him, a bowl of flowers on a low table, signed to base, 5 1/8in. (13cm.) high; together with a okimono of a peasant and a duck, on a naturalistic base, 8¼in. (21cm.) high, losses. (2), *Condition: - Farmer & boy: One flower missing from bowl. A small piece missing from both farmer's and boy's hands. Otherwise good. , - Peasant & duck: Duck's head missing and probably originally had a second duck to base. Glue residue around neck and left arm and to top of right hand - top of staff missing.

(11.5 x 7.6cm.).* Condition: - Case: Very good condition, with no faults. - Paper: Tiny hole and folded in three.

Garbe's emotive and often dramatic compositions take inspiration from the New Sculpture movement which aimed to convey a renewed sense of dynamism and physical realism, somewhat removed from the more stylised representations of neo-classical sculpture. Recognised for his versatility in working with ivory, bronze, clay and plaster, Garbe gained much praise for his work and was elected into the Royal Academy in 1929 after several nominations from contemporaries such as Frampton, Thornycroft and John Goscombe.
