Bisset James (1762-1832) - Miniature on ivory - St Jerome in the desert.The original circular white marble frame having a reverse painted convex glass, verso with original script `Bisset, Birmingham`. Diameter of frame 16.5cm. James Bisset although Scottish born was one of Birminghams most famous citizens during the early years of the 19th Century. He was an artist, writer, collector, art dealer and poet who was listed in local trade directories as a painter of miniatures. His invention of a method of painting on the inside of convex glasses enabled him to develop a successful business making ornamental goods. In 1808 he established Birminghams first museum and picture gallery that displayed everything from paintings and medals to taxidermy.
