λ A fine late 18th century ivory fan, with elaborately carved, pierced and gilded roccoco Chinoiserie guards and sticks. The sticks partly gilt having a carved central cartouche with oriental figures and two further to the reserves with floral bouquets. The leaf hand-painted with a rural scene of a shepherd and his flock by a river. The leaf mounted à l'anglaise fashion, the verso painted with a dancing figure. Circa 1760. Length 30cm.
λ An English fan, the carved ivory guards with floral carving and two gentlemen dancing (one front and one back) and a mother-of-pearl rivet thumb guard, the pierced and carved sticks with a seated lady and gentleman, trees and buildings, the hand painted paper leaf depicting Andromeda chained to the rock with the Kracken approaching her, Perseus carrying Medusa's head whilst riding Pegasus to the background and onlookers on the shore. The verso painted similarly with a bacchanalian scene with gilt border and landscape reserves. Both sides with fine miniatures to the lower gorge. With tortoiseshell thumb guard and later suspension loop. Circa 1720. Length 22cm.
