Japanese Art A Sashi ivory netzuke Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912), 19th century . . Cm 15,50. Honey-colored patina, carved in the form of two aubergine berries with leaves and branches. The sinuous elongated shape places this artifact among the so-called sashi netsuke identified precisely by this specific form. The theme of the aubergine, which in Japanese is pronounced "nasu", is traditionally associated, by homophony, with the expression "may this come true" thus investing this fruit with important auspicious values, so much so that it is one of the three themes, together with the mountain Fuji and the hawk, of Hatsuyme (first dream of the year) in which, according to tradition, the wish of luck and happiness for the coming year is realized.
Japanese Art A snake shaped netsuke Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912), 19th century . . Cm 6,00 x 3,00. Natural patina ivory carving depicting a lifelike wrapped snake, with engraved scales highlighted by black pigment and obsidian inlaid eyes. This type of netsuke, known as katabori, is characterized by the pleasant roundness of the shapes and by the choice of subjects, which are often linked to the fauna.Two character mark incised.
Indian Art An ivory carving depicting Lord Krishna India, Goa, 18th-19th century . . Cm 7,00 x 30,50. An elephant tusk tip, finely carved with Krishna playing the flute, named Venugopala. The main figure is also surrounded by seven undressed gopies, each one resting on a lotus flower. Traces of polychromy throughout the carving.Provenance: private collection, Milan, Italy
Chinese Art A monochrome Kendi China, possibly Song dynasty (960-1279), 13th century . . Cm 18,00 x 21,00. A pumpkin-shaped pourer characterized by a high splayed neck and a rounded body covered with an ivory white glaze with dark flecks. This type of vase, introduced in China in the Song era, was very popular and widely exported to the Middle East where it was employed as a water pipe.
