λ Public execution interest. A rare and unusual early Victorian bone or ivory toggle / fob seal, inscribed 'Execn of S. D., Aug V., 1843, C.P. Makr' and the base with 'T. I. B', with a brass suspension ring, 3.2cm high. Provenance: 'A Lifetime of Collecting' - The property of a Gentleman. The initials 'S. D.' on this toggle relate to Sarah Dazley (1819-1843) the first and only woman to be publicly hanged at Bedford Gaol. She was known as the Potton Poisoner after she was convicted of murdering, by arsenic poisoning, her second husband William Dazley. She was also suspected but not tried of murdering her first husband and son, Simeon and Jonah Mead, in 1840. She was executed on the 5th August 1843 on the New Drop in front of thousands of onlookers and was the last person to be publicly hanged at Bedford Gaol.
λ An early Victorian ivory 'Royal Academy Antique School 1768' student's admission token, for Silvester Charles Capes, admitted on the 24th April 1843, 5.1cm diameter. Provenance: 'A Lifetime of Collecting' - The property of a Gentleman. Silvester Charles Capes (1825-1901) was a Victorian architect, he won the Royal Academy's silver medal in 1845 and became a fellow of RIBA in 1867.
λ An early Victorian ivory 'Royal Italian Opera Covent Garden' pass or token, for the Honourable A. Willoughby, for stage box number 1, dated 1847, 3.7cm diameter. The Theatre Royal, Covent Garden re-opened in 1847 as the Royal Italian Opera Covent Garden, after the auditorium was completely remodelled following a fire in 1846.
λ A mid-Victorian carved ivory presentation conductor's baton, the handle carved with a semi-naked figure of Euterpe, the muse of music, holding a lyre, above the Royal garter and with musical trophies, 60.3cm long, in a leather case applied with a white metal plaque, inscribed 'PRESENTED TO JAMES ROBERT BURN ESQ ACCOMPANIED BY A MUSIC STAND AND MEMORIAL BY THE MEMBERS OF HIS SINGING CLASS October 1866'.
