MASON JAMES: (1909-1984) English Actor. A correspondence collection of thirteen A.Ls.S., James, (and one with his full signature), eight pages and eight written to picture postcards and a few correspondence cards, 8vo and 4to, various places (London, California, Ireland, Switzerland etc.), 1965-83, all to Marion Leigh of the National Film Board of Canada. Mason writes and interesting series of letters to his friend, stating, in part, 'Many months seem already to have gone by and a clobber of not very stimulating work. The entire cast usually assembles at some airfield where the cameraman recommends what should be shot to suit best the everchanging weather' (written on the printed stationery of the Dublin Intercontinental hotel and accompanied by the original envelope featuring a printed logo for the British war film The Blue Max in which Mason starred in the role of General Count von Klugermann, 18th October 1965), 'I spent two weeks in Huddersfield, no ten days, but it felt like two weeks in an igloo. I came back Monday with a streaming cold & forced myself with various miracle drugs & infusions to keep the frogs in my throat at bay and perform two days of looking as the fat & now guffunal German General in the Blue Max……soon I shall be plunging into the Los Angeles smog bowl where my sinuses will take a further beating' (7th January 1966), 'This is my favourite ghastly postcard…..Southern California does not seem to improve, but there are some nice people, my children for instance' (written to the verso of a colour picture postcard depicting Kirk Douglas adding his signature to the wet cement outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California, 14th January 1966), 'Many thanks for the full info about the piano. I paced out the salon of this suite and figured it was about the same size as my future Swiss salon. Six foot ten inch of piano threatens to take a heck of a lot of its floor space, but still….Anyway, I can't make up my mind at the moment….', (Hotel Imperial, Vienna, 11th December 1967), 'I so enjoyed getting a fan letter from you! I too thought it was a dear little film, a great credit to Ivory & Ruth whats her name who wrote the script for him' (5th February 1976), 'I just want you to know that our Jackie McGowan was marvelous (sic) in the film as I knew he would be. Might even be a rather marvelous (sic) film. Great place, Sydney' (Sydney, Australia, 9th May n.y.), in others hoping to meet his correspondent in London or Paris, sending Birthday greetings etc. Five of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes hand addressed by Mason (one signed by him in the return address panel to the verso). Also including a postcard photograph signed by Mason, the image depicting him outdoors in a half length pose. Boldly signed with his name alone to the lower white border. Generally VG, 14 Marion Leigh worked as a documentary film executive with the National Film Board of Canada in London and was the partner of A. J. 'Con' Leventhal, living in Paris with him until his death in 1979.
