A carved wood ivory and alabster figure of Grace Darling probably Belgian circa 1900 depicting the heroine on a craggy rock looking out to sea a life preserver inscribed: Grace Darling beside her height 21cm 8.25in. Grace (1815-1842) was the daughter of William Darling the keeper of Longstone Lighthouse on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast. On 6 September 1838 the SS Forfarshire sank in a violent storm three-quarters of a mile out. Of the 600 souls on board nine escaped in a lifeboat and nine more clung to rocks. Their plight was realised at dawn the following day by Grace and her father who with none of Grace's brothers about set out to rescue those stranded. Grace rowed the boat clear of the rocks as she and her father saved all nine survivors. Grace's actions dramatic and heroic enough in reality were embellished by imaginative journalists and she soon became famous throughout Britain. Queen Victoria sent her a letter of praise and fifty pounds. When people wrote requesting locks of her hair so obliging was she that friends feared she would soon need a wig. Her romantic legend intensified after her death becoming ever more sensational prompting her sister Thomasina to publish Grace's correspondence in 1880 revealing a most ordinary young woman content to remain her father's housekeeper on the windswept island.
