He held several senior ministerial posts during this time, most notably those of Viceroy of India from 1925 to 1931, as in the present photograph, and of Foreign Secretary between 1938 and 1940. A late 19th century Jaques , London Travelling 'In Statu Quo' travelling chess set, the folding mahogany case containing a boxwood and rosewood chessboard, with bone chess pieces which can be locked and released, impressed makers marks to the box, width 23.5cmCondition: Crack to one surface when closed, one side locking bar lacking, two red pawns replacements, one addition rook. Chessmen are bone and not ivory, flecking can clearly been seen in the pieces and there are no concentric rings, five of the white pawns have fine hairline cracks running through them as does one of the knights, one castle has a very small chip to a crenellation, a spare castle is present which has red staining to the base, red side less good with fair differentiation of colour, two of the pawns being notably different, one salmon pink, possibly plastic, another very dark red of indeterminate material but again possibly plastic, of the key pieces the king has some wear, both knights have damage to the ears and one bishop is a little darker in tone than the other pieces.
A Japanese Meiji period ivory okimono carved with a doctor treating a man's ear, signed, height 12cm Condition: Slightly faded to the front, possibly the tip of the tool in the doctors hand is broken away, one slender crack running from the seated figures shoulder down the back of his robe for approximately 1 inch, otherwise very good.
