A PAIR OF ANTIQUE KASHAN PICTORIAL RUGS woven in colours with floral filled vases within garden settings featuring fish ponds, deer, flowers and birds, on cream grounds, within conforming floral borders, each 220cm x 135cm (2)Provenance: Private collection, Dorset.Note: Kashan, in the northern part of Isfahan province, Iran, was a centre of silk production since Safavid times. At the end of the nineteenth century the Persian Kashan weavers began to produce high quality rugs and carpets, as part of the ‘revival’ in the Persian handmade carpet craft, which re-established the high standards of design and technique established in the 17th century classical era. They often incorporate medallion designs, but all over repeat patterns are frequently seen. Pictorial rugs of varying subject matter also feature highly in their design repertoire. The colour palette can be deep and rich in the classical tradition, with shades of red and blue predominant with ivory detailing. Softer colour hues appropriate and in tune with modern décor styles are also prevalent.

A FLORENTINE BRONZE OF NESSUS AND DEIANIRA 17th century, in the manner of Francesco Fanelli (fl.1608-1641), depicting Nessus rearing and holding the struggling Deianira in his arms, 21.75cm high on a rectangular pedestal base, 30cm high overallProvenance: Purchased from Daniel Katz Ltd., Jermyn Street, London SW1YPrivate collection, Hampshire.Note: This popular theme from ancient Greek mythology is one of the tales recounted in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Having offered to carry Hercules and his wife Deianira across the river Euenos, the centaur Nessus took advantage of the situation to ravish Deianira. Hercules, observing the scene from the river bank, drew his bow and fired an arrow, which pierced the centaur's chest.Francesco FanelliLittle is known about Francesco Fanelli (born c.1577 - died c.1641). Fanelli, a Florentine by birth, was documented in Genoa in 1608, where, until about 1631, he produced religious works in marble, silver, ivory and bronze. By 1635, he was working at the English court. Although he described himself as 'sculptor to the King of Great Britain', it is unclear whether this title was official. The V&A owns versions of several small bronzes by the artist, described as "francisco the one-eyed Italian" in an inventory of Whitehall Palace in 1639. George Vertue stated that Fanelli "lv'd and dyd in England"; he is last documented in 1641 and believed to have died soon after.
THE BATTLE OF COPENHAGEN (1801): A PRESENTATION SWORD FOR VALOUR almost certainly awarded to Midshipman James Proctor, the curved sword with blued steel German blade, ivory cross-hatched grip bearing silver and gilt mounts in the form of a lion's head and mane and mounted with an oval silver plaque engraved with the coat of arms (1801-1816 pattern) of King George III supporting a medal decorated with a fouled anchor; the reverse with a similar plaque engraved with the monogram "JP", probably for Midshipman James Proctor, surmounted by a naval coronet, within a garter inscribed 'Battle of Copenhagen' above the ship's name 'EDGAR'. The top of the blade signed in gilt 'J.J. Runkel Solingen', with belt and slings in a fitted mahogany box lined in green velvet, the sword 94cm longIvory submission reference: 27PA12UFJames Proctor (died before 1814), the likely recipient of this presentation sword, was midshipman in HMS Edgar, 74 guns, which led Nelson's division at the Battle of Copenhagen in April 1801. As the first ship to engage the enemy, Edgar sustained extensive damage and suffered 142 casualties including one lieutenant killed, another whose arm was shot away, and five midshipmen wounded. Among the wounded was Proctor who, given the officer losses, may have demonstrated outstanding leadership for which he received this sword, possibly from his grateful commanding officer Captain James Murray. Proctor recovered from his wound, was promoted to lieutenant and by March 1805 was serving in Spencer, 74 guns, attached to Nelson's fleet in the Mediterranean. However, with many of the crew suffering from scurvy and fever, Spencer was sent away to re-victual just days before Trafalgar. The ship subsequently joined Admiral Duckworth's squadron for the Battle of San Domingo in February 1806. Presented before the institution in 1803 of Lloyd's Patriotic Fund, this sword is an example of an unofficial presentation made on an ad hoc basis by a senior officer following an action. To Nelson's dismay, the Battle of Copenhagen was not recognised with a gold medal and, unlike the Nile, it was not widely commemorated making relics connected to the action rare.Johann Justus Runkel (1751-1808) Born in Germany Runckel emigrated to Britain as an importer of swords and sword blades from Solingen. He set up shop at 8 Tookes Court, Castle Street, Holborn where he sold swords to military officers and unmounted blades to other English cutlers including Thomas Gill. Despite fines, court cases and confiscation of blades for undervaluing imports, he was one of the most important merchants involved in the trade of Solingen blades in London and became a freeman of the Cutlers Company in 1796.

Chesney had persuaded the British government to allow him to survey the long stretch of the river Euphrates from the Anatolian mountains to the Persian Gulf. In 1835 Chesney was put in charge of the expedition and carefully selected his associates, about fifty people in total, including Hastings Fitz-Edward Murphy. Two iron-hulled steamboats, the Euphrates and the Tigris, were chosen for the voyage. The objectives of the expedition were to set up a new trade route between Britain and India (which would avoid the lengthy voyage around the South African Cape of Good Hope) and to prevent Russian expansion in the Near East, as some considered this a threat to Britain's control of India.
