Late 18th/ early 19th Century Chinese pierced and carved ivory Brise fan, painted to central cartouche with vignette depicting Lost Love, 26cm long (a.f.), with associated Chinese fan case. Note: This fan by repute given to Isabelle Pigot by George IV, thence by family descent to the present vendor. Family history suggests a strong royal connection - Isabelle's great grandmother, Frances Goode, was tire woman to Queen Caroline, whilst her great uncle was milliner to George III. The 'Goode' children included George, made baron and governor of Madras; Robert later baronet, made general and distinguished in the American Revolution and Hugh eventually brother in law to the prime minister the Duke of Grafton. Isabelle Pigot's upbringing at Patshull Hall, the Pigot seat, brought her into contact with Mrs Fitzherbert - George IV's first wife - of nearby Tong Castle and thus the reputed provenance is feasible.
