A good Yomut Turkmen dyrnak gol main carpet Turkmenistan third quarter 19th century 11ft.7in. x 6ft.7in. 3.53m. x 2.01m. Two tiny spots of slight moth damage upper right main border remains of original blue and red barber’s pole selvages and striped plainweave ends. This carpet has fine velvety wool and eight colours-dark blue light blue dark green brown-red light brown-red salmon dark brown ivory. It is in excellent condition.
Tekke Turkmen ensi Turkmenistan about 1870-80 5ft.1in. x 4ft.1in. 1.55m. x 1.25m. Very slight splits base elem right and edge upper left small loss upper right corner and to outer narrow guard at base. This ensi has eight colours-dark blue mid blue dark green dark salmon brownish red yellow mid brown ivory.
Marasali prayer rug Shirvan region south east Caucasus about 1870-80 4ft.9in. x 3ft.4in. 1.45m. x 1.02m. Overall uneven wear heavy in places crude repiling in one or two small areas. A kink across the centre broken causing the rug to break into two roughly equal pieces with minimal loss of surface area. The change of the main border design to a procession of bird-animals at base is an unusual element of the overall design. Other unusual features include the exceptionally large botehs the widely spaced main border and the dark brown ground. The rug has plied undyed brown and ivory wool warps and two shoots of very fine ivory Z2S wefts.
Fragmented rug by the Kurds of Bijar north west Persia second half 19th century 9ft.2in. x 3ft.10in. 2.80m. x 1.17m. Reduced in length by horizontal cut across top end of field areas of slight wear in field. This rug represents a design found on Kurdish rugs from a wide area. James D. Burns Antique Rugs of Kurdistan illustrates two examples nos. 24 and 51 the first of which he attributes to Herki in central Kurdistan and the second to north of Sa’uj Bulagh in eastern Kurdistan. A fine example sold in these rooms 9 December 2004 lot 1341 has a main border associated with 18th century Caucasian rugs (probably from the Karabakh) while the present rugs is clearly from the Bijar (Garrus) region. It has a beautiful palette of 9 colours pink-red tan salmon dark blue pale blue light green yellow blue and ivory. It probably dates from the middle of the 19th century./t
