Thomas Hargreaves - A Young Lady, said to Eliza Hargreave, with curly dark hair, in a white silk dress, signed and dated on the backing card T Hargreaves Pinxt 1819 and inscribed in ink in another's hand Eliza Hargreave - she was born 11Nov 1791. She entered into rest (Sweet Saint!) 29 June 1872, painted by T Hargreaves 1819 given to J W B in 1866, ivory, feigned oval, 8.5 x 6.7cm, in morocco case Possibly a pendant to the preceding miniature. In fine condition
John Smart - A Lady, wearing a ribbon in her hair and blue trimmed white gown, signed with initials JS, dated 1786 and inscribed I, ivory, oval, 5.2 x 3.8cm, in gold frame with bright cut reverse centred by a glazed oval This ravishing portrait was painted shortly after Smart's arrival in India. Having obtained permission of the East India Company, he and his daughter Anna Maria sailed on the 19th April 1785 on board the "Dutton" bound for Madras. On arrival they took up residence in North Street, Fort St George. He enjoyed the patronage of the Nawab of Arcot, government officials, army officers and many of the English residents. Much of Smart's finest work dates from the ten years he spent in India. The unknown sitter's fashionable dress is closely similar to those of Lady Oakley and Charlotte Porcher who sat to Smart in India in 1786 and 1788 respectively. A Victorian artificial horizon by Dollond, in black japanned brass with glass lights and fitted with a mahogany tray with central ivory roundel, signed Dollond London, with ivory mounted boxwood flask, in fitted mahogany case, 20cm w In fine original condition, the black paintwork a little scratched, consistent only with moderate use, no restoration. A good example in entirely unrestored and complete condition.
A Betty Joel sycamore dining suite, comprising: bow ended table, on two geometric uprights, 78cm h; 265 x 98cm, eight elbow chairs, a bow ended serving table and a sideboard with ivory handles, the table and sideboard with framed labels to the underside dated 1932 (11) The labels record that the suite was made in 1932 designed by Betty Joel at made by H Green or W Witt at the Token Works in October 1936 Betty Joel supplied boardroom table of this model and a set of closely similar chairs to Williams Hollins Ltd of Nottingham, the proprietors of the brand "Vyella". David Joel commented that this was one of the firm's best remembered commissions for it not only furnished but panelled a whole floor of offices, meeting rooms and showrooms for the firm "in lovely empire woods". The bowed ends of the table were reflected in the curved corners of the room, a design of striking modernism (see Joel (David), The Adventure of British Furniture 1851-1951, p96 and plts 95 & 97. The sideboard is relatively scarce for, as Joel wrote in 1953, "the serpentine and bow fronts and simple enrichment were hardly commercial then (1935) and certainly would not be now.
An Italian ivory inlaid walnut sgabello, the solid back, seat and uprights with geometric designs, 100cm h, partially legible ink inscription on a label to the underside "This chair was given to me on my 63rd Birthday by my Wife and Children William A-, Altrincham 29 June 1878, c1870 Some worm damage to the upper part of one of the front legs, the back leg repaired but in otherwise good original condition and of attractive patina. An unusual silver-mounted sword, Burmese or Malaysian, 19th Century with finely watered curved single-edged blade, engraved silver cross-piece formed of a pair of straight quillons with flattened globular terminals, engraved silver pommel cap, finely carved ivory grip formed as a pair of demons, and silver knuckle-chain, in its original velvet-covered wooden scabbard with large silver mounts pierced and chased with flowers and foliage inhabited by birds and fish; a Persian shamshir, 19th Century, with curved single-edged watered blade retaining traces of a calligraphic cartouche (areas of pitting), steel cross-piece, and horn grip-scales, in associated scabbard; another, 18th Century, with curved watered blade, iron cross-piece decorated with a calligraphic cartouche, and ivory grip-scales; another, 19th Century, similar; and two middle Eastern swords, 19th Century, each in its scabbard the first: 81.2 cm 32 in blade (6)
A Fine Daghestani Kindjal, second half of the 19th Century with slender blade tapering to a sharp point, cut with an off-set fuller on each face and with a brief inscription on one side, ivory grip-scales profusely inlaid with gold scrolling foliage and pellets, fitted with a nielloed and parcel gilt repousee collar at the bottom and retained by a pair of cone-shaped washers en suite, in its original wooden scabbard entirely encased in nielloed and parcel-gilt silver with repousee designs of scrolling flowers and foliage and the outer face set with large panels of ivory inlaid with gold shaped scrolling foliage and cartouches en suite with the hilt, and the reverse chased with a brief inscription and the initials A.B. 51.7cm; 20.375in
A Daghestani kindjal, second half of the 19th Century with slender blade tapering to a sharp point, cut with an off-set fuller on each face, silver hilt chased and nielloed with flowers and inset with a small ivory plaque inlaid with gold foliage, in its wooden scabbard, the outer face encased in silver chased and nielloed and inset with three ivory plaques all en suite with the hilt (the blade now a loose fit), together with a contemporary belt with chased silver mounts; an Arab Jambiya, late 19th/20th Century, with horn hilt fitted with a band of gold repousee foliage at the base and a plain silver plaque at the front, in its original scabbard decorated with silver and gold thread, fitted with locket and chape en suite with the hilt and retaining a portion of its original suspension belt; another, late 19th/20th Century, with ivory hilt applied with four gold rondels and silver scabbard; another, early 20th Century, with silver hilt and pommel each decorated with beadwork, in its scabbard decorated en suite; and three Indo-Persian arrows, 18th/19th Century (one broken) the first: 46.2 cm ; 18.25in (7)
A rare Naval Officer's sword with folding guard by T & I. Gill, 83 St James St., London, circa 1806-08 with well preserved curved regulation blade etched and gilt on a blued panel over three-quarters of its length with an elaborate arrangement of foliage, the crowned Royal cypher, the figure of Brittania and a fouled anchor on one side, the crowned Royal arms and makerÕs details on the reverse, gilt-brass stirrup-hilt fitted with so-called attack-guard locked by a blued catch, gilt-brass lionhead pommel, and chequered ivory grip, in its original leather scabbard with large brass mounts including signed locket (the scabbard leather with extensive damage); a composite German rapier, partly 17th Century, with slender fullered blade, iron hilt of rounded bars incorporating a scalloped plate at the base, and plummet-shaped pommel (grip missing, now dismantled); a French regulation small-sword, early 19th Century, the blade sparsely etched with trophies over the lower portion, silvered brass hilt incorporating a boatshell-guard and the pommel formed as a plumed helmet (now dismantled); and a transitional small-sword blade, mid-17th Century, of flattened diamond section, stamped 'Sebastian' and 'Hernandez' within a narrow fuller on the respective faces the first: 68.5 cm ; 27 in blade (4)
a rare commonwealth period Officer's English-lock pistol, circa 1650 with 13 1/2 in brass barrel formed in two stages, decorated with a band of na•ve lightly punched scrollwork between punched sprig girdles on the breech, a pair of punched and incised girdles at the median and cast with a raised breech moulding fitted with iron tang ( the barrel shortened by up to 2in.), bevelled trapezoid lock retained by three side-nails, fitted with separate pan, horizontally acting sear and dog safety-catch engaging a flat broad-breasted cock ( top-jaw and screw missing, the steel altered within its working life), figured walnut full stock, fluted fore-end ( incomplete towards the muzzle, cracked and chipped along the left-hand side), flattened butt carved with a wheat-husk moulding behind the barrel tang, punched with three small decorative arrangements of stars, the pommel fitted with an ivory cap ( chipped) and enclosed by a band of brass engraved with strawberry foliage, brass trigger-guard incised with a wavy linear pattern en suite with the cock and safety-catch, and one small brass ramrod-pipe ( ramrod missing) 52.1cm., 20.5in The barrel and lock are each unmarked. The principal characteristics of the lock place it within the type 2 category of the17th Century English-locks as identified by Graeme Rimer in his study of the firearms at Littlecote House and subsequently expanded upon by Messrs Godwin, Cooper and Spencer in their published survey;
A .577 calibre flintlock service pistol of Light Dragoon type, circa 1800 with 9in barrel, plain lock, figured walnut full stock, and regulation brass mounts (the steel parts pitted); a percussion pepperbox revolver, Birmingham proof marks, circa 1845, with fluted barrel group, engraved steel action, and chequered wooden grips; and a Naval dirk, early 19th Century, with fullered blade retaining traces of etched and gilt decoration, gilt-brass cross-piece pierced with ropes and foliage, gilt-brass hound's head pommel, and spirally fluted ivory grip, in its leather scabbard with gilt-brass mounts the first: 38.7 cm ; 15.25in (3)
