ROBERT SALMON (BRITISH/AMERICAN 1775 - 1845), PORTRAIT OF A LADY IN REGENCY DRESS watercolour and gum arabic on ivory, signed with initials and dated 1812 on slip 8cm x 6.5cm Mounted, framed and under glass Note: Robert Salmon was primarily a marine and landscape artist. In 1828, he left England for America, where he devoted himself almost exclusively to marine subjects for the next seventeen years, returning to England in 1845. However, he was also a talented portraitist, as evidenced by his fine retrospective portrait of the American corsair John Paul Jones, created in 1828, most likely painted to introduce himself to the American market.
Stephen Gibbs (1896-1974) Nantucket Basket Purse, oval ivory top with a carved Aletha Macy ivory seagull, closure and knobs, branded upon the base “S. Gibbs Maker, Nantucket, Mass.”. Inscribed 'Kathryn May' inside lid. Stephen Gibbs wove baskets for 20 years from 1954 until he passed away in 1974; his baskets are among the finest woven and highest quality of this time period. Mr. Gibbs used oak for his staves and frequently placed a long ivory clasp to hold the peg on his purses. This clasp has become a trademark of a Gibbs baskets. Dimensions: 6.75 x 10 x 7.5 in.
19th C. Ottoman Yatagan Sword w/ Zoomorphic Hilt. Wood, Iron and brass. Made probably in the Balkans. The grip plaques are typically made from bone, ivory, horn or silver, and spread out in two 'wings' or 'ears' to either side at the pommel (a feature which prevents the hilt slipping out of the hand when used to cut). Length: 28 in. In excellent condition; showing a fine, aged patina from much handling and use. Blade is oxidizing and has several old areas of edge roughness. Provenance: Herbert Harris, NYC and FL, since the 1950's. Mr. Harris was lead percussionist with the NY Philharmonic and a hired musician for numerous studio and live projects. Collected by him while in Burma,prior to coup of 1958.
C1800 British Yeomanry Cavalry Officer’s sword & scabbard by Henry Osborn. Gilt finished lion mane pommel, with stirrup hilt, with plain langets & quillon. Hatched ivory grip, showing some age cracking, with 3 small chips to border. The 76cm long curved slashing blade shows etchings of trophies of arms & laurels, with small amounts of the original blue and gilt finish to both sides, the remainder of the blade shows use and wear, with some light pitting spots and a few minor field cuts to lower blade edge. The leather & brass scabbard retains both suspension rings with leather crazing and a very old/period slash hole to left side centre. The leather scabbard, with the maker dedication ‘H. Osborn Sword Cutler & Belt Maker To His Majesty, Birmingham & Pall Mall, London’ to reverse upper locket. Lower portion stitching has separated, however the scabbard is in good, sound condition which could easily be repaired. A good rare sword, rarely seen for sale. Overall length: 90 cm.
C.1800 British Volunteer Light Cavalry Officer’s sword & scabbard by Edward Loxham. Flat topped steel pommel (lanyard ring absent) with straight bar hilt, with engraved feather langets & quillon. Excellent ribbed ivory grip, solid & firm. The 63cm long slightly curved double fullered blade shows use and wear, with some light pitting spots, but generally good overall. The leather & brass scabbard retains both suspension rings with X impressed design to centre of leather face. Engraved dedication ‘Loxham Royal Exchange’ to reverse upper locket, with leather frog stud to reverse. All stitching present and scabbard very good overall. A good volunteer officer’s sword, rarely seen for sale. Overall length: 78 cm.
C.1805 Royal Navy Midshipman’s dirk & scabbard, Napoleonic War era. Gilt finished lion mane pommel, with opposed gilt washed brass guard, with fouled anchor langet, the reverse plain. Hatched ivory grip, showing light use and natural colouring to both sides. 40cm long curved blade, showing 70% of blue and gilt engraved portions/colour, with usual wear and light fading. Blade fits snugly into the mid brown leather & gilt finished scabbard. No loss of stitching to rear seam, with ‘St. Andrews’ patterns to leather and hand engraved details to metal furniture. A very good conditioned piece & attractive wall hanger.
***REOFFER IN DERBY BARGAIN HUNT SALE NOVEMBER A&C £150-£250*** A Chinese export black lacquered and gilt decorated combination sewing and writing box, late 19th century, of hexagonal form, the hinged lid opening to reveal lift-out fitted tray containing a selection of carved ivory and other sewing implements, the front with drawer opening to reveal a small writing slope surrounded by compartments containing ink bottles and pen tray, black lacquered and gilt decorated with panels of figures, fitted twin carry handles and raised upon quadruple carved and gilded claw supports, height 16cm x width 35.5cm x depth 26cm.

(162.6g), complete in wooden box with Faberge marked silk lining. Condition; very slight lose of to top right hand corners to front and back (see images)
