A 17th century, French or German ivory, silver mounted and jewelled needle case in the form of a lady musician holding a guitar, her long dress is panelled and carved with tassels, at the base the opening in chased silver set with a carved, banded agate blackamoor cameo. Height 9cm. (See back cover illustration)

A CHINESE CANTON IVORY PLAQUE showing the Hongs of Canton, carved in relief, the reverse with carved crest from the Drummond family, 6 1/4" x 4", circa 1800. James Drummond, later 8th Viscount Strathallan first sailed to Canton in 1787 as a `writer` in the East India company`s employ. Fifteen years later he had risen to become President of the Select Commitee, the senior position in the factory, and he remained in this post until his return to Britain in 1807
