A Victorian coromandel dome-top games compendium, retailed by Baxter of 16 Cockspur Street, London, having a hinged lid and drop front, opening to reveal a fitted interior with lift-out trays, including ivory and red-stained ivory chess pieces, ebony and boxwood draughts, a cribbage board and counters, dice and dice shakers, bone and slate dominoes, four decks of playing cards (to include one unopened pack of De La Rue & Co Patent Ivory Playing Cards), together with a folding hardwood chess board within the cover, (backgammon board verso), the whole 19.5 cm high x 33.5 cm x 19 cm.Footnote: Provenance: Puchased in the 1980s by a member of the vendor's family, from Lt. Col. Montagu Cleeve (1894-1933), who was a neighbour.Condition report: General wear to the pieces, commensurate with age, with some likely replacement parts. Height of Kings in chess set: 7.5cm. The case with light surface scratches throughout, visible on close inspection. The case and contents would benefit from a light clean.

A 19th century Belleek Irish porcelain 1st period grasses pattern tea service. Hand painted with grasses and flowers and tassle design to handles on an ivory background. The teapot has a goose head design to the spout and printed instructions to the inside of the lid. Makers stamp to the base.

A 19th Century Chinese carved ivory cane or parasol handle decorated with figures playing "Go" in a garden setting and dragon, approx. 4.3 cm diameter x 4.5 cm deep, together with two Chinese carved ivory panels with pierced decoration of figures in a garden setting, 9 cm x 5.5 cm, together with a 19th Century relief carved ivory panel depicting an interior scene with figures, a spinning wheel and dog, or wolf, at the door, 10.6 cm x 8.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Ivory panel - approx 154 g. Coarsely filed around the edges. Has some naturally occurring cracks within the panel. In need of a clean. Some small knocks and bumps. Has writing and marks to the back and some chipping to the base edge on the back. General wear and tear conducive with age and use. Appearance of wear to the more raised carving. A 19th Century mahogany cased artificial mercury horizon by J Hughes, comprising rectangular iron trough, brass framed roof shaped cover with glazed side panels and boxwood mercury storage jar with ivory threaded stopper / spout, the case bearing label inscribed "J Hughes Manufacturer of Sextants & Quadrants, Compasses and Telescopes & C, 38 Queen Str Ratcliffe E London" "NB The above articles cleaned and repaired in the best manner" (as used by the Hydrographic Office of The British Admiralty), case 18.5 cm x 14.5 cm x 12.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS No particular provenance - a local source.Case appears to fit though unknown if a "true union" - see images for further detail in this respect.Condition - whilst basically sound appears tired in all areas - arguably in need re-painting / restoration though at the same time appears basically original. Ivory to the cylinder with crack vertically and has a small section of wood lodged in the hole at the top which appears to be snapped or damaged - see images for further detail.There also, having inspected other examples of the same sort of thing, appears to be an ivory funnel / piece missing - again see images for further detail.Case has some damage to the front lower left corner and lower right corner. Dents, scratches and minor abrasions conducive with age and use. See images for further detail.Wooden tray has had a section of damage to one end and repair. Metal outer tray with paint loss and minor damage. Cylinder with marking to base edge and minor denting and scratching conducive with age and use. Case interior ditto - see images for further detail.
