The sword comes with a hand written history of his service and this sword, “This sword was presented to Captain Hamilton for his part in repelling an attack by a French naval force in the straits of Malacca in 1804”. The Battle of Pulo Aura, took place on the 14th February 1804 between well armed merchant ships of the East India Company and a heavily gunned French naval squadron commanded by French Admiral Charles-Alexandre Léon Durand, Comte de Linois. The East India Company ships were commanded by Commodore Nathaniel Dance, it was Dances heroic and aggressive tactics in the action which led to the French fleet retiring from the action after a short engagement. Not content with the French fleet retiring from the action, Dance then ordered his ships to chase the French fleet off until they were safe to continue their voyage to India. The paperwork states that in Captain Hamilton’s signal log, he states that all Captains involved in this action were presented with a ceremonial sword for saving the fleet and its cargo, “This naval engagement in the family was known as the Battle of the China Seas”. They go onto state that they originally owned a miniature of Captain Hamilton but this was stolen, vendor states this is why he was able to purchase the sword from the family. A very interesting sword presented for a small naval engagement in the South China Seas during the Napoleonic wars. Please note a CITES certificate will need to be acquired for export outside of the European Union.
