A SMALL HISPANO-PHILIPPINE IVORY FIGURE OF THE SLEEPING CHRIST CHILD (SANTO NINO DORMIDO), PROBABLY MANILA 17TH / 18TH CENTURY carved with His right hand raised, His left hand held over a length of embroidered material around His midriff 9cm long During the 17th through to the 19th century, many Christian subject ivories were worked in the Philippines by a mixed community of originally emigré Chinese sculptors. From the 16th century, Spanish traders and missionaries had fostered an industry in Christian ivories from the artisans of Southern Fujian Province in China. The trade spread to the Philippines: by 1639 some 30,000 Chinese were living in Manila, many of them craftsmen and traders, known as 'sangleyes', in the Parián (meaning market place) area of the city, an enclave just outside the city walls.
A NAPOLEON III ENAMEL CASKET, PROBABLY MAISON TAHAN, PARIS, CIRCA 1870 rectangular, the bowed sides and lid with ivory enamelled ground, the lid and front with 'jewelled' decoration of arabesque medallions, with gilt-metal rim mounts and applied scrolled feet, interior lined in buttoned cream silk 29cm long A number of caskets with the same gilt-metal mounts and shape as this example, with similarly 'jewelled' decoration, still bear their Tahan paper labels to the underside, or are so inscribed to the metalwork. The business started in Belgium making 'bois de Spa' boxes, but on moving to Paris expanded their range of luxury goods to great renown. The firm had retail premises in the Rue de La Paix from 1849 and subsequently from 1866 at Boulevard des Italiens until their closure in 1882.

Along with two brothers, he is thought to have been taught the art of miniature painting by his mother. His works are not usually signed, although apparently there is a signed miniature by him of Rabbi Moses of Plymouth. Whilst known to have worked in Plymouth, he and one brother, Joseph, became competing miniature artists in Bath, both men confusingly advertising themselves in local papers as |Mr. Daniel of Bath| (Daphne Foskett, 'Collecting Miniatures', Woodbridge,1979, p.247). He served as Governor of Jamaica between 1807 and 1827, and was instrumental in preparing the colony for emancipation. He retired to England to serve as Postmaster-General under Wellington. A Very Rare 1805 Pattern Naval Officer's Sword Presented By The Duke Of ClarenceBy Prosser, Manufacturer to His Majesty H.R.H. The Duke Of Clarence, London, Early 19th CenturyWith tapering fullered blade (minor surface patination) double-edged at the point, the forte on both sides etched and gilt against a blued ground with an elaborate crowned naval trophy, on one side above post-1801 crowned royal arms and mottoes, and on the other above a crowned fouled anchor, regulation gilt stirrup hilt with langets each engraved with a fouled anchor, lobed rear quillon, pommel cast and chased as a lion-mask and extending to form a faceted back-piece, and ribbed ivory grip (repaired beneath the pommel) bound with twisted copper wire and set on one side with a gilt plaque engraved with the crowned arms of the Duke of Clarence within the belt of the Order of the Garter, and on the other side with a gilt plaque engraved with unidentified assumed recipient's arms, in original black leather scabbard (repaired, some crazing and loss of finish) with linear engraved gilt mounts and two rings for suspension, the locket signed in full on one side, and retaining much of its original gilding 83 cm. bladeFootnotes:The Duke of Clarence, later King William IV, was known as the 'Sailor Prince'. He entered the navy in 1779, attained the rank of Captain in 1786 and was best man at Nelson's wedding in 1787. He gave a number of swords to naval officers who had distinguished themselves in various ways. At first, the swords he gave were similar to those carried by certain cavalry regiments from the early 1790s and are sometimes referred to as 'coffin pommel swords' (see the example sold in these Rooms, Fine Antique Arms and Armour ..., 29 April 2010, lot 212). Later, the Duke gave swords which adhered to the 1805 and the 1827 patterns.
