Ï’ A small Indian ivory 'Yali' carving, South India, 17-18th century, the head with tenon suggesting once forming a leg support, with bulging eyes, flame-like mane, fangs and distinctive rearing pose typical of interpretations of the yali (or vyala), with traces of old paint, 12.5cm high Provenance: From a Private English Collection Compare with a similar example in Victoria and Albert Museum, museum number IS.146-1986. They discuss the likely origins of the piece as: 'This small figure is modelled on the sculptural yali pillars that featured in South Indian temple architecture. Pillars carved with rearing animals of this type first appeared in the architecture of the Vijayanagara empire 1336-1646 . They feature in temple complexes commissioned under the Tuluva dynasty in the 16th century, often in mandapas (a porch or pillared hall). It is very likely that this yali figure was made under Nayak patronage in the 17th and 18th centuries. During this period, carvers and sculptors made much use of the yali in their work. A SMALL CHINESE SOFT-PASTE BLUE AND WHITE BOTTLE VASE KANGXI 1662-1722 Painted with archaistic vessels, scholarly items and auspicious emblems, the neck with a slightly raised rib and decorated with bands of scrollwork and circles, with a six character Jiajing mark to the base, together with an ivory stand carved with four spreading feet, 10.2cm. A CHINESE IVORY CARD CASE, A CUP CARVED FROM A NUT AND TWO HARDSTONE PENDANTS QING DYNASTY The card case carved in relief with figures and animals engaged in various activities around garden pavilions, with scaly dragons and bats to the edges, the cup decorated with birds amidst bamboo and flowers, the base with a mark, both pendants carved in openwork with fruits amongst leaves, 9cm. (5) Provenance: from the collection of W B Tapp (d.1992), Bristol.

A PAIR OF CHINESE IVORY TABLE SCREENS QING DYNASTY Each carved in shallow relief with a scene of houses amidst trees in a rocky mountainous landscape, all within openwork floral borders, the reverse of each incised with an inscription, the stands surmounted by lion dogs and carved in openwork with floral and foliate designs, with the feet formed as dragon-carps, 26.5cm. A CHINESE IVORY CARVING OF A MONKEY ON A GOURD EARLY 19TH CENTURY Formed as the primate climbing on a large fruit, it clings to a leafy vine whilst reaching out for an insect, the top of the gourd a removable cover which lifts off to reveal a chain and a further monkey, 5.3cm. Provenance: purchased from Hua Shi Oriental Art Pte Ltd, Singapore, on 26th March 1988. The original invoice is available. Cf. the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, museum no.A.926-1910 for a similar piece.

A CHINESE IVORY BITONG 17TH CENTURY Decorated to the exterior with two scholars seated on a river bank in a rocky mountainous landscape beneath swirling clouds, with two further scholars and an oarsman on a sampan boating down the waters, with pavilions, pine and willow trees dispersed throughout the setting, the reverse incised with an artemisia leaf and an inscription, 12.5cm.
