Moss,《Snuff Bottles of China》,倫敦,1971,第115頁,編號235The 'Eight Horses of Muwang' or King Mu of the Zhou Dynasty, alludes to a folktale when the King dreamed of being an Immortal. According to the story, the King was determined to visit the heavenly paradise and taste the peaches of Immortality. A brave charioteer named Zaofu used his chariot to carry the King to his destination. During these travels the King's chariot was pulled by eight horses named after the colour of their hair. In other accounts, the horses' names reflected their unusual talents such as 'horse that gallops without touching the ground'.A closely related Yangzhou glass snuff bottle of similar colour scheme, but decorated with Buddhist lions, is illustrated by H.Moss, V.Graham and K.B.Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, vol. 5, Hong Kong, 2002, no.1013.See a related snuff bottle but with three sheep, 19th century, which was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 28 November 2019, lot 507.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

ITO SEIU (1882-1961)Scene from a Kabuki Play Showa era (1926-1989)Kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink and colours on silk in striped silk mounts with prominent jikusaki (scroll ends) made from frost-marked kanchiku bamboo, depicting the merchant Echigo Shinsuke cutting down the geisha Miyokichi at the Edo (Tokyo) Fukagawa Hachiman Festival in a scene from a kabuki play (see below), signed and sealed at lower right Seiu; with wood tomobako storage box inscribed Hachiman matsuri yomiya no nigiwai Seiu ga (Mayhem on the Eve of the Hachiman Festival, Painted by Seiu). Overall: 178cm x 61cm (70 1/8in x 24in); image: 140.7cm x 50.8cm (55 3/8in x 19 15/16in) (2).Footnotes:In a climactic scene from the kabuki play named on the storage box for this scroll (see above), the merchant Echigo Shinsuke slays the beautiful Miyokichi, whom he had previously rescued from drowning in the Sumida River during the collapse of the Eitai Bridge from the weight of people crossing to attend the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival (a historical event that took place in 1807). Shinsuke pawned his goods to raise the funds needed to buy out Miyokichi's contract as a geisha but when she rejected him he went on a killing spree, eventually cutting her down. Shortly afterwards, he discovered that she was in fact his sister. The play premiered in 1860 and was frequently depicted in woodblock prints that provided Seiu with some of the imagery seen in this dramatic visual retelling of the tale, although the murder had previously been shown as being perpetrated on a boat rather than in the precincts of the Hachiman Shrine.Ito Seiu was born in the Asakusa district of Tokyo and received a varied artistic education in metalwork, ivory carving, painting and later sculpture. He started his career as a newspaper illustrator but is best known as the 'father of bondage painting', for which he used as a model Sahara Kise (later his second wife); he also painted violent and ghostly scenes from the Edo period. He fell foul of government censors during the 1930s and much of his work was destroyed during the Tokyo air raids of spring 1945; his surviving paintings are rare. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Educated at Eton and New College, Oxford, he became a leading expert in the development of archaeometry, radio-carbon dating and research in thermoluminescence techniques. A trustee of the National Gallery and the British Museum, he sat on the Advisory Council of the Science Museum. He was also a hot-air balloon pilot and created his own balloon. He was a regular client at Bluett's and purchased Qing Imperial monochromes. See R.Davids and D.Jellinek, Provenance, Oxford, 2011, pp.211-212. The Taibo zun vessel such as the present lot is typical of the Kangxi reign. Its name derives from the Tang dynasty poet Li Bai (701-762), also known as Li Taibo who was notorious for his drinking, and is often depicted leaning against a wine jar of this form. This shape is also referred to as a jizhao zun, as it resembles a chicken coop. Waterpots of this beehive shape are more commonly found with peachbloom glazes. See for example, one peachbloom-glazed waterpot, Kangxi mark and period, in the Percival David Collection, the British Museum, illustrated by R.Scott, Qing Porcelain for the Imperial Court from the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, Singapore and London, 1997, no.60. See a similar soft-paste beehive-shaped waterpot, Kangxi, in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (acc.no.348.1994). See a related white-glazed waterpot, Kangxi six-character mark and of the period, is illustrated by J.Ayers, Chinese Ceramics: The Koger Collection, p.167, pl.139, where the glaze is described as 'moon-white' and the medallions are of 'a dragon biting another creature, and a bat'. Another white-glazed beehive waterpot, Kangxi, is illustrated in The Wonders of the Potter's Palette: Qing Ceramics from the Collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1984, pp.64-65, no.28.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
