An ivory Woodsman, c.1880, standing shouldering two bundles of faggots, his gourd and axe in his sash, the whole coral coloured, lacks signature reserve and stick, 19.3cm high It is difficult to conceive this figure being artificially stained intentionally; it is either some subsequent accidental event or pigmentation in the tusk. It is known that the colour of ivory depends on what the elephant ate, but this tint has not been previously noted.
A serene ivory Figure, 19th century, probably of Wen Chang Dichaun, seated in a dragon-engraved robes reading a book and seated on a simulated rootwood throne, 22.7cm, fixed wood, dragon-carved stand Wen Chang is the God of Literature who supervised the awarding of official positions following success in the State examinations. A Canton ivory Card Case, c.1840, deeply and carefully carved with figures in gardens and buildings, the edges with peaches and birds, inner flange damaged and rim chips, 11.5cm Condition Report One end of lid split off and stuck back. Top corner of case missing. Colour very much uniform throughout.
A carved ivory Temple Vase and Cover, c.1920s, the cover with two Buddhist lions and ball above a finely-carved dragon and feng amongst clouds between key borders, the deeply-carved body decorated with dragons, the pierced arched handles terminating in mask loose rings, on three lion mask and paw feet, 30cm (2) Condition Report No obvious major faults. Some small splits.
A rare ivory Perfumier, Qianlong, of notched rectangular form, carved with a vigorous chilong amongst clouds on a pierced diaper roundel within key fret repeated on the underside, the sides with ribbons and diaper, one sliding, coral bead and red glass terminal, one corner chip, 4.7cm Condition Report Small piece missing on corner where lid slides. Fine splits throughout. Most visible in images (available upon request).
Two ivory Brooches, second half of the 19th century, one with openwork flowers surrounding a coquillia nut cabochon with figures, rose-gold mount, 5.2cm, the other deeply carved with figures playing weiqi in a garden, silver-gilt mount, 4.5cm (2) Condition Report Dents to gold frame of coquillia nut example. Second brooch has small splits. One foot missing.
An impressive pair of ivory Vases and Covers, early 20th century, each of elongated shield shape, deeply carved with pheasants on a fruiting shrub above chrysanthemums or other birds on prunus and magnolia, the necks with flower and leaf-scroll handles hung with rings, the domed covers with gnarled stumps, tinting in black and brown, minute chips, 35cm, wood stands and fitted case Condition Report Pre 1947. Splits throughout. Small losses to panels. Losses to twig finials of lids, one has regluing. Please see additional images (available upon request).
