Appukuttan Achary (India, 1925-1997) 1971 Figural Abstract Painting. Signed and dated upper right. Oil on canvas. With inscription verso. Born in Trivandrum in 1925, Appukuttan ( known as Appu ) (1925-1997) learned drawing and painting from the Ramavarma Drawing and Painting Institute, Trivandrum. In 1957 he joined the Regional Design Centre as a master craftsman for ivory carving and also as an artist of South Indian temple documentation. A number of his ink drawings have been included in "Pratima Kosha" an encyclopaedia of Indian Iconography-published in VI volumes by professor S.K.Ramachandra Rao and by the Kalpatharu Research Acadamy. Appukuttan Achary received the National Award in the year 1965 for his ivory carving and also 15 awards from various state Lalit Kala Acadamies. His book ?Rekha? which is to be published shortly depicts traditional motifs, designs and sculptural forms with a foreword written by the famous author and art critic Sri.Chaithanya. A George III Scottish silver teapot and stand, by W. and P. Cunningham, Edinburgh, 1802, oval and with reeded rim, engraved with acorns and oak leaves, the hinged cover with ivory finial, engraved on one side with a crest and on the other with initials, the stand conforming and with wood base, together with: an Old Sheffield plate sugar-bowl and cream-jug, each on bun feet, engraved with initials, the teapot 29.5cm wide, gross weight of silver 15oz 16dwt (4). The teapot is marked underneath. The cover apparently unmarked. The finial thread and nut with marks for Charles Stuart Harris, circa 1900. The is overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use to the teapot. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the engraving. There has been a repair to the hinge with small areas of visible solder. There have also been repairs to the handle sockets. The wood handle is probable later and there is some cracking and staining to the ivory finial. The marks on the stand are rather worn. There is some scratching and wear, noticeable as a softening to the engraving. There is wear to both the sugar-bowl and cream-jug with copper showing through in areas. Each piece engraved with initials EF though with some differences to the engraving between the silver pieces and the Old Sheffield plated pieces.
