AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY CHINESE HARDSTONE AND WOOD SCREEN, in two sections, the screen onlaid in various hardstones and carved wood with two bronze-form vases of flowers, a column of calligraphy onlaid in ivory, the reverse with lacquered decoration of butterflies hovering above flowers and leafage, the stand with carved and pierced decoration, 35.5in high & 22in wide at widest point.
A LARGE GOOD QUALITY JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD CARVED IVORY TUSK VASE, supported on a fixed gilt lacquered wood stand, the sides of the vase carved in detailed relief with a profusion of boys in the company of two adults and a caparisoned elephant, 17.4in high overall, the tusk vase itself 11.9in high.
A LARGE PAIR OF EARLY 20TH CENTURY SIGNED JAPANESE IVORY & WOOD FIGURES, one of a man bearing aloft a branch upon which two birds perch, the other of a man holding a bird cage and carrying a small parasol-bearing boy upon his shoulders, each with a signature on an inlaid rectangular lacquer reserve to each stand, 16.5in high & 16.2in high overall.
A GOOD LARGE SIGNED GENRYUSAI SEIYA JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD BRONZE ELEPHANT GROUP, modelled as an elephant being attacked by two tigers, one of the tigers on the elephants back, the other crushed beneath a front foot, the removable tusks of ivory, signed Seiya saku in rectangular reserve to base, 25.75in high to top of tusk & approx. 23in long overall.
Japanese kimono, mid-blue silk damask, painted or printed with flowers and foliage and embroidered in coloured silks and couched metal threads, padded hem, lined with ivory silk and two red silk rectangles, about 1920s. Together with a collection of textiles including four fine red wool hangings, embroidered in silk with Chinese calligraphy, together with a fine white cotton damask coverlet and a lace edged and insert silk embroidered cotton pelmet. Provenance - second part of this lot: Bernheimer Collection. Sold as a collection with all faults not subject to return. (7)
Silk and metal thread embroidered coverlet, probably Italian, 18th century, 41in. x 35in. 104cm. x 89cm. Ivory heavy silk ground exquisitely embroidered in coloured silks and heavily embroidered and appliquéd with silvered metal thread foliage motifs. Edged with silver metal thread lace and lined with peach silk. Seamed across the centre horizontally and vertically, possibly pieced together at a later date from a larger piece of embroidery. Shattering to the ground and to the lining; repairs and surface marks. Sold with all faults not subject to return.
Kazak `triple-medallion` rug, south west Caucasus, late 19th century, 7ft. 3in. x 4ft. 6in. 2.21m. x 1.37m. Overall wear, heavier in some places; crease marks in places. Note the arrowhead `blocks`, which are usually seen in the ivory ground octagonal medallions in the field, appearing in our piece in the main blue border.
Daghestan rug, north east Caucasus, late 19th century, 4ft. 7in. x 3ft. 4in. 1.40m. x 1.02m. Overall wear and corrosion; losses to ends. Note the ivory, flower filled, field which is woven in the opposite direction to the design with the exception of the two tiny animals in the top left corner. Seichur-type border of running dog design in green and brick.
Exceptional Kazak rug, south west Caucasus, late 19th/early 20th century, 6ft. 7in. x 5ft. 1in. 2.01m. x 1.55m. Slight corrosion in places and a few crease marks. Impressive looking rug of superb colour; note the three quirky figures in the lower right bar of the central medallion and the ivory main border of spatial triangle and saw-edged leaf design typically found on Fachralo Kazak rugs, as in Bennett, I. Oriental Rugs, Vol. 1. Caucasian, p. 42, pl. 23.
Good Senneh rug, Hamadan area, north west Persia, early 20th century, 6ft. 9in. x 4ft. 7in. 2.05m. x 1.40m. Overall wear and fading. Very finely woven rug with many interesting design elements including a pair of tiny silhouettes of parading lions in the ivory centre medallion, double bird-head pendants to the ivory centre medallion; small spaced rosettes and flower sprays in the deep indigo outer central medallion; and boteh motifs in the ivory octagons in each corner and pale gold octagon in the centre of the rug.
