λ A JAPANESE RED LACQUER AND IVORY SHODHANA MEIJI 1868-1912 With asymmetric shelves, cabinets and a single drawer, inset with ivory panels richly decorated with figures, elephants and a boat, the lacquer frame decorated with leaves and flowers in red, green and ochre, one panel signed, 75cm x 81cm 27cm.

Spectacular and massive Agra carpet, north India, last quarter 19th century, 40ft. x 16ft. 7in. 12.20m. x 5.06m. The deep ‘agra’ crimson red field with an all- over lattice design of cloudbands and floral palmettes within linked arabesques, reciprocal green and ivory trefoil inner guards; beautifully shaded dark blue to deep aquamarine main border of flowers and palmettes. Condition: Areas of wear and corrosion in places; heavier wear on left hand side edge of field and border down to foundation in some places; slight surface stains; small holes and crude repairs centre field towards top end of field; 1ft. 3in., 38cm. square repair to right side of field just below centre of carpet. Akseray half kelim, central Anatolia, second half 19th century, 11ft. 10in. x 2ft. 9in. 3.60m. x 0.84m. Overall wear; some repairs; corrosion to browns and some losses to ends. Hanging rings on one long edge. Note the random extra ‘tendril-like’ ornamentation to some of the motifs in the outer ivory border.
Yomut(?) Turkmen 3 x 3 gul mafrash, Turkmenistan, late 19th/early 20th century, 1ft. 4in. x 2ft. 11in. 0.40m. x 0.89m. Complete with plainweave back. Left outer guard missing; holes/bites to lower edge; ‘bite’ to top right corner; some wear in places. Note the slightly flattened appearance of the guls and the narrow border of ivory ‘butterfly’ motifs alternating with quartered medallions. Good lustrous wool with robust handle.
Yomut Turkmen ivory ground mafrash face of latticed ashik motifs, Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 1ft. 2in. x 2ft. 6in. 0.36m. x 0.77m. Slight wear in places. Note the row of bird’s feet type motifs in the top elem and the band of interlinked ‘S’ motifs in the narrow lower elem. Remains of plainweave back verso. Lustrous wool with good colour and soft handle.
Exceptional Yomut Turkmen ensi, Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 5ft. 6in. x 4ft. 5in. 1.68m. x 1.35m. A most attractive ensi with lustrous wool and beautiful colour especially a light blue. Note the offset rows of the pekvesh motif in the central rectangular panels; the colourful syrga motifs in the ivory ground ‘U’ shaped borders leading to the lower double panel of erre motifs and a chequered brocaded kelim end.
Attractive Tekke Turkmen 5 x 10 gul main carpet, first half 19th century, 7ft. 11in. x 7ft. 2.41m. x 2.13m. Overall wear, heavier in some places; some repairs; ‘bites’ to both selvedges; several fabric conservation patches verso. Very finely woven with good colour and soft handle. Note the two ivory ground octagons in the border lower corners featuring star interiors and the complexity of the main border. See Jourdain, Uwe. op. cit. p.94; pl. 38 for a similar example. Our piece lacks the wide kelim ends.
Ersari Turkmen 3 x 6 gulli-gul main carpet, south west Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 9ft. x 7ft. 2in. 2.75m. x 2.18m. Overall wear, heavier in some places with holes; losses to lower end; striped kelim turned under at the top end. Note the occasional use of a pale yellow and ivory; the two colourful minor ornaments of star-like motifs in the field and the shades of blue throughout including a light bluey green. See Reuben, David. op. cit., pl, 22 for a very similar carpet.
Attractive Kurdish rug of all over flowering plant design, north west Persia, circa 1930-40s, 8ft. 3in. x 4ft. 2in. 2.51m. x 1.27m. Hole/split to top of field left side, and slight damage/’bite’ to top end. Note the single tiny animal to the right edge of the field, centre, just above two earlier attempts at animals, and the single ivory field octagon containing a star at the lower edge of the field, right side.
Good Baharlu ‘floral boteh’ rug, Khamseh Confederation, Fars, south west Persia, late 19th/early 20th century, 6ft. 9in. x 5ft. 2in. 2.05m. x 1.58m. Overall wear; small repairs; small holes. Note the beautifully drawn floral motifs in each corner with a large ivory floral boteh to the side. Very finely woven with good colour and lustrous wool with soft handle. Red wefts.
Silk ikat coat, Syria, late 19th century, raspberry pink with ivory ‘bar’ design, the main back panel with a narrow yellow, ivory and pink striped band to hem and repeated on the front facing opposite the toggle fastening; long sleeves with ‘open’ cuffs lined with floral printed and plain blue cotton. Hole to lining of right cuff; holes to lining of coat in places.
Two Kurdish rugs, north west Persia, about 1910-20s, one with pale blue inner guard, 7ft. 2in. x 3ft. 10in. 2.18m. x 1.17m., the other with ivory boteh inner guard, 7ft. x 4ft. 2.13m. x 1.22m. Both overall wear, holes; damage and repairs. Sold as a collection with all faults, not subject to return. (2)
Two good Japanese silk kimonos, both 20th century, one ivory silk gloriously printed with large flowers with metallic details, and pale blue flowing bands, lined with ivory silk; the other with tiny ivory circles (shibori design) printed on a light red silk ground; brocaded collar; scarlet silk lining to sleeves; ivory silk lining to kimono. Both in good condition.
Taoist Priest’s apricot silk robe, China, 19th century, richly embroidered in floss silks and metal threads with dragons chasing the flaming pearl; Buddhist symbols among clouds and brightly coloured cranes; purple silk collar, hem, facings and sleeve edges embroidered in couched metal threads; part of the collar and lower front facings of ivory silk similarly embroidered, lined with coarse yellow cotton. Some wear and fraying to edges; shattering to silk in places. Together with a Chinese black silk hat with red wool lining; a child’s silk and brocaded silk head piece and a pair of black cotton embroidered shoes. (5)
Fine inscribed silk Qum rug, south central Persia, last quarter 20th century, 4ft. 11in. x 3ft. 4in. 1.50m. x 1.02m. The small ivory cartouche in the top outer guard reads: ‘Qum, Sadeghi’. Note the plethora of small rug motifs woven in the field surrounded by floral motifs and a variety of objet d’art.
Exceptional north Indian pashmina pile rug, second half 20th century, 5ft. 7in. x 3ft. 8in. 1.79m. x 1.12m. The design a copy of the Ardebil carpet complete with an inscription in an ivory cartouche at the top end. This extraordinary rug has an extremely high knot count and the superior quality of the pashmina wool gives it a shimmering silky pile with a very soft handle. Fabric hanging band at top end verso. Knot count: 660-690 knots per sq. in. approx.; 100 knots per sq. cm. approx.
CHINESE CARVED IVORY CYLINDRICAL PIERCED NIGHT LIGHT HOLDER overall decorated with figures and buildings amongst foliage on a foliate carved and pierced base. 5" high (13cm). Early 20th Century. CONDITION REPORT: Evident internal crack to base and small vertical cracks around rim. Rather dirty in places. No other obvious losses or damage.
LATE 18th/EARLY 19TH CENTURY IVORY AND TORTOISESHELL SINGLE SECTION TEA CADDY with oval white metal blank cartouche under escutcheon to front panel, the caddy being of octagonal shape with loop handle to lid. 10.5cm high (4") CONDITION REPORT: Some minor cracks to ivory, areas of loss to tortoiseshell inlay and minor chips to rims as expected. Lid is present inside tea caddy although loose. Surface ware, scratches, dings etc. as expected with age.
EARLY 19th CENTURY FLAME MAHOGANY RECTANGULAR TEA CADDY, the interior revealing three lidded compartments with ivory knob handles and circular glass bowl to the centre, standing on brass paw feet. 13" x 8" x 8" (34 x 20 x 20cm) CONDITION REPORT: Replacement brass hinges and screws. Glass bowl is not original to the piece. Some minor losses in places and wear commensurate with age. A split to the side and splits to the front.
