An ebonised work table, circa 1850, decorated in the Chinoiserie taste with gilt highlighting with exotic birds, flowers and other extravagances, the lid opening to reveal removable trays containing intricately carved and pierced Canton ivory lace accessories in fitted compartments, approximately twenty pieces, all raised on lyre shaped pedestal supports terminating in carved tiger's claw feet, 60 by 42 by 70cm high.

Fernandes) A HUNTING EXPEDITION TO THE TRANSVAAL 8vo (192 x 132 mm) Translated from the Portuguese by Mariana Monteiro. 280 pages, original red gilt decorated cloth over bevelled boards, back dull, hinges strengthened with cloth, bookplate of the South African Archaeological Society on the front paste-down endpaper, some light soiling throughout the text, edges uncut. Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 1, pages 416-417, Das Neves who visited the Transvaal in 1860 in order to hunt elephant and trade in ivory, records his impressions of the Transvaal during this period. He describes his experiences hunting game including hippopotamus, lion, and buffalo, and he also records the oral history of local Shangaan and Swazi regarding the events surrounding the assassination of Dingane. Czech (Dr. Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 ? 1999, (2011) page 75, ?A Portuguese hunter and explorer, Das Neves set out from Lourenco Marques on an expedition into the Transvaal in 1860 to collect ivory and stimulate trade in Portuguese territory. He hunted hippopotamus on the river Save, also collecting buffalo and gazelle there. Near Zoutpansberg in the northern Transvaal, he hunted lion, buffalo and elephant, though the descriptions of the hunts are rather scant in detail,? AN ANGLO-INDIAN VIZAGAPATUM IVORY GAMES CASKET, late 18th century, of oval outline, veneered on sandalwood, penworked with ribbon-tied trailing flowers within harebell borders, the interior fitted with two rectangular lidded compartments for playing cards and four oval lidded compartments containing fourteen oval, thirty two circular and fifty two rectangular mother of pearl gaming counters, variously engraved with flowers, vignettes, numbers and one of three monograms, the casket is accompanied by a hand written booklet recording the identity and biographies of the monograms, 38cm wide x 29.5cm deep x 8cm high. A Victorian Tunbridge ware mercury desk thermometer Thomas Barton, Tunbridge Wells, late 19th century The rectangular tablet applied with ivory Fahrenheit scale mercury thermometer signed T. BARTON, TUNBRIDGE WELLS to upper margin, flanked by vertical bands of parquetry floral trail decoration on a ground of macassar ebony, on stepped base with repeating rosette decoration to upper tier and conforming floral band to lower tier, 13.5 (5.25ins) high. Thomas Barton is perhaps one of the best known makers of Tunbridge ware parquetry objects and worked for 86 Mount Ephraim Road, Tunbridge Wells 1845-1903.

Louis Lawrence Bellatti is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS & RETAILERS 1650-1900 as working from 34 Steep Hill, Lincoln 1849-68.

Springer, Bristol, early 19th century With arch-glazed shaped ebony and box strung door to the silvered vernier scale calibrated in barometric inches, with the usual observations and signed J. Springer, Bristol to upper margin, the trunk with conforming ebony and double box line strung edges above circular base with ivory button-centred moulded domed cistern cover, (lacking level adjustment screw), 89cm (39ins) high. James Springer is recorded in Moore, A.J. THE CLOCKMAKERS OF BRISTOL 1650-1900 as working in the parish of St. Thomas, Bristol in 1797.

A brass bound mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Clement Harris, London, circa 1835 The circular four pillar single chain fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensating weights and helical balance spring, the spotted backplate with spring set-up ratchet and blued-steel pillar and backcock securing screws, the 4 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial inscribed J.M. Mullick beneath signature C. Harris, Cornhill, London, 796 and WIND/UP dial to centre, with unusual fine gilt fleur-de-lys hands and secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with winding square to underside, mounted via gimbals into a mahogany three tier box centred with shield-shaped brass name plaque to the top tier above front now applied with vacant rectangular ivory plate, the sides with recessed lacquered brass carrying handles, the angles inset with brass reinforcement straps, 18cm (7ins) wide. Clement Harris is recorded in Mercer, Tony Chronometer Makers of the World as working from 76 Cornhill 1822-42. He was apprenticed to George Margetts and is thought to have gone into partnership with James Hatton (after Margetts death) to form the firm of Hatton and Harris who are recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from 1816-26.
A mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Victor Kullberg, London, late 19th century The circular four pillar single chain reverse fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensating weights and helical palladium balance spring, the spotted backplate with spring set-up ratchet and blued-steel pillar and backcock securing screws, the reverse of the frontplate stamped 6859, now with 3.75 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial bearing etched number 2632 beneath VICTOR KULLBERG Maker to the Admiralty, THE INDIAN AND ITALIAN GOVERNMENTS, 105 Liverpool Rd., London N. and WIND DOWN/UP dial to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with repeat 6859 serial number to interior and with circular winding hole shutter to underside, mounted via gimbals into a mahogany three tier box centred with shaped brass name plaque to the replaced top tier above front now applied with circular ivory trade plate numbered 2632, the sides with recessed lacquered brass carrying handles, 18cm (7ins) wide. Victor Kullberg is recorded in Mercer, Tony Chronometer Makers of the World as born in Sweden 1824, he was apparently drawn to London by the Great Exhibition of 1851 and subsequently set up business at 105 Liverpool N1 (by 1870). Kullberg developed several balances with middle error temperature compensation and became one of the finest makers of marine chronometers of the period; he died in 1890 leaving the business to be continued by George and Peter Wannerstrom.
