An early 20th century set of eight Chinese carved ivory figurines, depicting the Eight Immortals, each mounted on an ebonised carved hardwood base, average height 12 cm, (8). The Eight Immortals were revered by Daoists and are believed to be figures of prosperity and longevity. They represented eight factors of Chinese daily life; men and women, old and young, rich and poor, noble and lowly. The stories of the Immortals were traditionally very popular, temples were dedicated to them and they are frequently represented in Chinese art.
