A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, With Double Paper Leaf, découpage for the top border and between panels painted in pastels and depicting various figures, those in the central cartouche being a wealthy couple in good 18th century costume, in front of a church, the man pointing, or perhaps proposing marriage? The verso is simply painted with a rural scene, in green. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with découpé leaf, the paper of ivory, unadorned, but with intricate patterns for the top border and each fold, showing figures on horseback and crowns. The upper sections of the guards are carved with a figure and the gorge sticks have simple piercing. The head is shaped and flattened at the very base. Guard length 11.25 inches or 285cm (2) The second fan was purchased at an antique shop.The upper guard has a repair with a long metal plate. A repair to the lower guard at the same point. Monture seen to be bowed at the top when closed. Fan 2, also bowed.

A Third Quarter 18th Century French Ivory Fan, the monture relatively plain save for carving to the upper guards, backed with cerise foil and gilded, and gilding applied to the shoulders/upper gorge. The double fabric leaf is plain to the verso, the recto being embroidered with metal thread and tiny gold sequins to highlight three features, those of a central vase of colourful flowers, and further flower sprays. Elsewhere on the leaf bright flowers alternate with groupings of musical instruments. A gilt and red painted border encompasses the designs. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm Purchased in an antiques shopLoss to the cerise foil in the upper guards, gilding bright, the leaf is relatively clean.

A Circa 1830's to 40's Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, the twenty three inner sticks and one guard carved throughout with buildings, figures and stylised foliage. Contained in a well -fitting fan box covered with 18th century yellow/floral weave silk brocade. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cmThe first stick in from the right is missing part of a tip. The lower guard is absent and the stick next to it is stuck to the small part of the remainder. The fan box is most likely for another fan.

George III: An ivory Fan, circa 1760's, the monture simply carved on the upper guards. The double paper leaf is découpé along the top border and sides, the design incorporating four crowns and GRIII. The centre is painted with a scene of rural workers harvesting the hay. The verso Is painted with a rose and buds with foliage. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm King George III was nicknamed Farmer George. Exhibited at Harewood House in the summer of 1986 catalogue No 12.The silver paper is a little dull, the découpé is in good order

An 1870's to 1880's Japanese Ivory Fan, the monture embellished with gold lacquer, featuring birds, cranes and others, and foliage, the guards also inlaid with shibayama, tiny pink blossoms and some tinges of green. The double paper leaf is embroidered in coloured silks with flowers and birds and the fan is finished with an embossed silver metal loop, and a silk tassel bearing an ojime painted in gold. Contained in a fan box of black and gold lacquer. Guard length 13 inches or 33cm Purchased from Philips London on 1st September 1983 for £180.00Very good, clean, no loss to the shibayama inlay.

A Late 19th Century Japanese Ivory Tanto, the knife handle and sheath extravagantly decorated with monkeys, carved and detailed in brown, with black painted eyes, lacquered, in various poses, and delightful expressions. One looks at a butterfly, another holds a shell, others are feeding. Two slightly wider central bands around the opening are carved with scaled beasts. Length 15.25 inches or 39cm. A 20th Century Chinese Fixed Fan of Lacquered Wood, the circular frame containing a cream silk panel delicately embroidered recto/verso with a basket a flowering rose tree within, a bird perched on the handle. Height 17.25 inches or 43.5 cm. Together with A 19th Century Mandarin Fan, the double paper leaf bordered in pink, mounted on wooden sticks, lacquered in black and decorated in gold, with a depiction of figures in a garden and two in a boat. The recto shows robed figures with applied ivory faces, the verso painted with flowers and foliage and a butterfly. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. (2) First fan: Purchased from an Antiques market in 1978.Fan 1 - Good. Traces of an old price label remain on the handle. Fan 2 - The monture is clean, and sound. The leaf has some rubbing, and slight splitting with previous repairs likely.

A French Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the double leaf plain to the verso, mounted on carved, pierced and gilded sticks, the upper guards backed with pale pink mother-of-pearl, the recto shows a courting couple in 18th century dress, seated outdoors to play a card game, accompanied by a chaperone. The cartouche is bordered with gold sequins which further meander across the leaf, accompanied by further detail in metal thread and flowers, formed from coloured sequins. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27cm. Together with An 18th Century Ivory Fan, with similar monture, the double fabric leaf plain to the verso, the recto painted vertically in gold and colour, showing flaming torches, flowers and musical instruments, alternating with embroidery to the folds and simple sequin decoration. Contained in an 18th century tube covered in green mottled paper. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27 cm (3) First fan: Purchased on the 14th July 1979 from Mrs Pamela Hudson for £45.00 Second fan: Purchased at Christie's SK on 5th of December 1978 for £20.00Some restoration to the folds, some splitting to the recto held by the verso, and some wear to the folds. The tube is in good order. Some strains to the verso of the second fan.

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved, pierced and silvered, the gorge sticks in alternating pairs, the guards incorporating metal thread embroidery and imitation seed pearls. The most unusual leaf, of paper, muslin and stiffened net (previously considered to be cat gut), features three painted vignettes applied to a net background, depicting figures in pastoral settings. The reserves are applied with muslin and embroidered with ''fillings'' that closely resemble lace. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm Provenance: Purchased from Phillips New Bond Street, London, on the 16th May 2000, lot 23, and illustrated in the catalogueThe leaf has been conserved with a rear layer of net, succeeding in holding together some split folds and as a result the fan is currently strong. The lace has retained its form and fillings. The painted areas have good colour.

Lot 2179

A Late 19th Century Japanese Ivory Fan, the guards lacquered in gold featuring birds in flight, perched on bamboo, and a crane beneath, both inlaid with small areas of Shibayama to highlight the vegetation. The gorge has similar lacquer decoration with birds, branches and butterflies. The double leaf, painted in pastels, depicts a river scene with small rural settlement, the points of some of the rooves serving to draw the eye to Mount Fuji towering in the distance. Subtle gold highlights give interest to the leaf. The verso is painted in similar colours with a rocky outcrop where birds seek blossoms and ducks and other wild fowl gather to seek feed and rest. Silver metal shaped and embossed loop, the black lacquer fan box having a catch decorated in similar fashion. Guard length 16 inches or 41cm (2)The box catch is not holding. The fan is in strong clean condition.

A Mid-18th Century Chinese Fan, Qing Dynasty, the gorge sticks of gilded ivory depicting a scaled beast, the guards of lacquered wood inset with mother-of-pearl and painted in gold and finished with tortoiseshell thumb guards. The velum leaf, painted in lilac recto/verso, and mounted à l'Anglaise, shows the presentation by two robed men of a gilded dish, the recipient seated on a dais and clearly of import. A lady reclines to the left, being fanned by a maid, whereas to the right the scene changes to feature three deer, one with antlers. The verso shows a lady seated under a tree, a newcomer being presented to her by a servant. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm Purchased at Phillips London on October 31st 1985, for £286.00The gorge painting is rubbed but the beast still visible. The leaf folds are fairly rubbed but retain good colour and detail. Some nicks to the upper folds. On the verso an indication that one damp splash has perhaps transferred to other folds.

A Wedding Fan, Regency Period, the monture of pierced and gilded ivory sticks, the double leaf with a charming depiction of a bride on her wedding night with Cupid pushing her towards her husband. The underpart of a table to the left of the recto bears the initials ''CB no 4''. The verso is painted with three delicate sprays of flowers. Barrel head. Guard length 7.75 inches or 19.5cmGood. Strong colour. Tiny nicks to a few upper folds. The verso has some light brown marking here and there, and some old reinforcement to some folds which is well done. A lyre was usually associated with Apollo but he didn't marry?

An Early 19th Century Ivory Fan, circa 1810 to 1820's, the sticks carved and silvered, with detailed and inlaid decoration of shaped metal roundels, the gorge particularly ornate. Barrel head. The double silk leaf is painted with a colourful scene of four ladies wearing flowing high waisted robes and gladiator sandals, seated outdoors, one being chased by an Asp. The reserves feature side sprays of painted roses, and 4 small blue ovals in Wedgewood plaque style, verso plain cream. The borders are embellished with scrolling in tiny gold and silver sequins. Contained in the bottom half of a card fan box lined in pink silk. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm (2) Purchased at Christie's SK on July 9th 1985 for £140.00The upper guard has a repair. The top half of the lower guard is a replacement. The leaf has good colour, the gold is shiny, some staining and restoration seen on both sides, and it is a little dry. Tiny slivers missing from the gorge piercing. No lid for the fan box

La Coeur Enflamée: An ivory Fan, circa 1780, probably French, the monture carved, pierced and gilded with cherubs, figures and urns. The paper leaf is painted with a young couple being rowed in a boat on a river by Pierrot, the flag of the boat being inscribed with the legend ''La Coeur enflamé''. The painting is bordered in pale blue, and gilded, with further floral decoration. The verso depicts a simple rural landscape. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Provenance: Purchased from the collection of Felicity BarnettSome rubbing to the folds. Colour still good. Gilding dull in places. Light staining to the leaf top right.

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, French, the monture carved, pierced, silvered and gilded, with medallions containing birds and figures, the gorge sticks in pairs. The silk leaf has a central fête champêtre, with two further vignettes painted with figures, and several columns built from further medallions and containing birds, vases and flowers. All these features plus a central design of leaves are bordered with tambour stitch in metallic thread and embellished with tiny sequins. The verso is painted with three simple landscapes and further medallions. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm Purchased at Bonhams on 3rd October 1979 for £85.00The leaf is fairly dry with some yellow staining. Some loss to the sequins. Some rubbing to the folds. Due to the embroidery the leaf is holding well with no sign of flaking.

Lot 2084

A Painted Silk Fan, dated 1889, the double leaf mounted on plain ivory sticks, a riot of colourful birds amidst branches bursting with white blossom, the painting signed to the left ''Amy 1889''. The verso, of cream glazed cotton, is plain. Guard length 12.5 inches or 32cm. Together with A Large Bone Fan of the Late 1900's, the monture lightly incised in fairly regular patterns, the cream leaf of gauze painted in soft blues and violet with dragonflies hovering over water, the insects and flower heads embellished with tiny silver sequins. The painting is bordered with machine lace in ribbon and bow design, and the verso is plain. Guard length 15.75 inches or 35cm (2)The silk fan is sound with good strong colour. The ivory has some slight staining in places and the cotton fabric to the verso (which is generally strong) has split to the extreme right and extreme left and is fraying. Very slight foxing to the verso. The second fan has a repair on third down on the upper guard. One split fold noted to the left of centre, and to the right of the leaf several little nibbles and one slightly larger can be noted, two folds at this point are weak but holding.

A Mid-18th Century Fan, the ivory monture pierced and carved, the upper guards with a Chinoiserie figure and the gorge with an oval containing a similar figure. The double paper leaf, bound to the top with a gold border, is découpé in vertical panels of different designs which alternate with small scale paintings of flowers and berries, to include carnations and convolvulus and heartsease, all flowers being used for the embroideries of the day. The verso has minute painted flowers. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Purchased at Bonhams on May 5th 1980 for £110.Some loss to the decoupage and backed with net in places to hold it

Shakespeare's Seven Ages: An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced with a particularly elaborate gorge, featuring a lady playing an instrument surrounded by Chinoiserie figures and flowers. The double leaf is printed with seven coloured ovals containing scenes relating to life in the times of William Shakespeare, by Sarah Ashton, 28 Little Britain, 1796. From the left, The Infant….'', followed by The Schoolboy going unwillingly to school, The Lover, The Soldier, The Judge, The Man ravaged by Age and finally the Second Childhood. Marked at the bottom right ''Entered in Stationer's Hall''. Guard length 9.75 inches or 24cm Provenance: Purchased from the collection of Felicity BarnettSound, clean, good colour.

A Circa 1880's Japanese Ivory Fan, both the gorge sticks and guards inlaid with Shibayama, of vines and flowers. The paper leaf is a wood cut in colour of a riverside scene, featuring a lady and dog to the left, the lady in conversation with a pedlar or other tradesman, to the right of whom an elegant lady in ornate kimono and carrying a parasol is also engaged in conversation with another. The leaf is signed/ stamped to the left. The verso shows several butterflies or insects approaching a clump of delicate wild flowers. An ivory ojime, painted and inlaid, hangs from a cord with a double cream silk tassel. Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm Purchased at Christie's SK on August 2nd 1983 for £65.00Some inlay missing to the upper guard.

Lot 2076

A 19th Century Ivory Fan, with carved and pierced 18th century monture, the sticks delicate and shaped, the gorge sticks in pairs. The double paper leaf is made to simulate vellum, and thus this fan is a marriage of two periods. The central cartouche continues the 18th century feel with a depiction of a Lady at her toilet, wearing a powdering robe as her maid attends to her wig. An elegantly dressed lady looks on, fan in hand, the boudoir finely appointed, the dressing table mirrored, and draped in silk. At both sides the reserves are finely painted with quite marvellous birds, perched on flowering branches and in flight. The verso is relatively plain with a fine gold border and central entwined initials, possibly ''CD'', in pink and blue, complementing the colours used on the recto. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Purchased at Bonhams on 16th May 1980 for £70.00A repair to the bottom leaf border is evident from the verso. The fan bears an earlier label stating “English about 1760. Good English fan rather rare”.

A Circa 1830-40's Chinese Carved Ivory Brise Fan, the twenty-one inner sticks and two guards featuring a central oval containing foliage, surrounded by quite large buildings and figures going about their daily life, one astride a horned beast, and others delivering provisions. The tips and guards feature scaly beasts with coiled bodies and large birds with outstretched wings. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cmRibbon defective.

Lot 2182

A 20th Century Chinese Paper Fan, mounted on interesting wooden sticks, Qing Dynasty, with an unusual carved ivory feature at the head, of perhaps the Chinese ''Palm Fan'' shape, or a sleeping bat (?), the cream leaf painted recto/verso with flowers and exotic birds, and featuring possibly a Chinese Poem. Artist's stamps. Guard length 12.5 inches 31.5cm Purchased from an Antiques Fair in 1977. Research in progress with regard to the text. Help from the Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou, China (via Tom de Leo, former FCI member) so far explains that two of the panels of text relate to an officer in the East Han dynasty, one panel refers to a war in the Western Zhou dynasty, and the other is a part of a Chinese poem of ''Qian Zi Wen'' which means 1000 characters text. The poem has 1000 characters and has been used to teach Chinese characters to children since the sixth centuryGorge stick broken. Another detached but no evident damage to the leaf where it could be slid back inside?

Lot 2014

A Circa 1760's Ivory Fan, the monture pierced, gilded and attractively painted, the gorge with bright turquoise, softer green and touches of other colours, serving to draw the eye to the carved cherubs and bowls of fruit in the centre. The gorge is further decorated with tiny iridescent shapes and parts are backed with thin mother-of-pearl. The head is well shaped, seen when open. The double paper leaf is painted with a rather imaginative garden, formed with arbours and statues. A makeshift tent provides shade whilst several activities are undertaken. A lady with a parasol holds a doll puppet; a lady wearing a laced stomacher is fanned by the gentleman who admires her; another gentleman attempts to purchase flowers from a maid who appears to have obtained his tricorn hat, in front of a shell fountain and a dolphin statue. And to the left, a servant prepares to bring liquid refreshment on a tray. The verso, the reserves painted with exotic flowers, shows two country boys playing bowls. Guard length10.5 inches or 26.5cm Purchased at Christie's SK on October 23rd 1979.The paint is almost rubbed away on the upper guards. Some rubbing to the folds. Backing MOP has losses.

Lot 2089

A Circa 1900's Ivory Fan, the monture carved, pierced and painted in gold, with the addition of tiny fragments of abalone. The gorge sticks alternate, with a central pair. The single leaf, of flesh-coloured gauze, is embroidered with gold and slightly bronze sequins in rows and columns. A yellow stone finishes the rivet. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with An Early 20th Century Bone Fan, the monture carved and pierced in interlinking ovals painted in light gold and a pale taupe. The gauze leaf, mounted a l'Anglaise, has a flesh coloured backing which shows through in places where the deeper colour gauze is cut away, with gold and silver sequins and spangles following the shaped fabric. Further star shaped spangles are embroidered onto the main body of the leaf (2) Purchased at Christie's SK on 17th May 1979 for £12.00 Fan 1 - Very slight light staining. One stick unsecured but present. Fan 2 - The fabric is splitting on the folds in several places. The upper guard is broken just above the shoulder and one rib is missing thus the gorge stick hangs loose.

Lot 2008

A Mid-18th Century Découpé Fan, the guards of ivory, the upper sections very wide, and carved with a meandering form. The gorge sticks are plain, of simple wood. The double paper leaf is painted in pastel colours from the left with a man in oriental dress being approached by a dog; a large butterfly, and a bird hanging from a blossoming branch, these flowers being repeated on the verso. Most leaf folds are découpé with a geometric design. Guard length11 inches or 28cm Purchased from Phillips on October 3rd 1979 for £75.00.Both guards are repaired at the shoulder with metal plates. When closed, the fan is noticeably warped, probably the result of the repairs at the shoulder.

Lot 2065

A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, with brightly coloured lithographed double velum (?) leaf, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, the gorge elaborate in three shades of gold, a central floral spray surrounded by birds and butterflies. The recto shows an Alpine scene with a farmer dressed in a country smock, standing beside his loaded cart which is pulled by bullocks. Several ladies and another man and boy are present wearing regional costumes. Signed to the left F. Dandiyoor? The reserves are richly decorated in gold and at each side of the central cartouche feature portraits of elegantly dressed ladies. The verso is less decorative with a simple rural scene of distant hills and buildings with spires in a wooded area. The reserves have some gold detailing. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Fan, with lithographic double paper leaf married to an earlier ivory monture with figures carved on the guards. The gorge is painted with sweeping floral curves of blue, yellow and lilac flowers. The recto shows men and women in Baroque costume, the men with lace collars and breeches, seated at a table covered with sumptuous table carpet playing chess. Side vignettes depict courting couples in costume, and two magnificent castles. The verso, in cream with gold, shows a courting couple by a well. Numbers appear to be printed on each side, with ''2259'' to the left and ''J???'' to the right. Guard length10.75 inches or 27.5cm (2) First fan: Purchased at Phillips on March 6th 1986 for £50.00. Second fan: Purchased on March 23rd 1978 for £22.00First fan, slight loss to the gilding on the upper guard but otherwise in good condition, bright strong colour. Fan 2, nothing noted.

Lot 2018

A Late 18th Century French Peephole Fan, the ivory monture carved and gilded with figures, with the addition of minute coloured sequins to the gorge. The double silk leaf, with cut outs filled with net to provide peepholes, shows the Sacrifice to Hymen, the gentrified figures on recto/ verso elaborately dressed, the reserves painted with vases of flowers, and musical instruments and embellished with metal threads and colourful sequins. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm Purchased at Christie's SK on 17th May 1979 for £170.00The leaf is quite dry and has probably undergone some period restoration, and some splits remain. In spite of this it is quite robust if handled with care.

Lot 2006

A Late 18th Century French Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced, some designs in pairs in the gorge. The silk leaf is painted with two extravagantly dressed ladies seated discreetly outdoors, lest the secrets they are confiding be overheard, one holding a fan, both rather flushed, not noticing Cupid with his arrows hovering silently beside them. One further colourful painted vignette shows a parrot and musical instruments. Three panels en grisaille show rural scenes and cherubs playing. All features are bordered with embroidered gold sequins and the reserves are filled with garlands of flowers. The verso is simply painted with three sprays of delicate flowers. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cmThe silk is dry and reinforced on the verso on several folds. The upper guard appears to have been repaired, best seen from the verso.

The Grand Tour: A Third Quarter 18th Century Ivory Fan, of the Grand Tour Period, the monture of ivory in the Chinese export fashion, the guards carved with flowers in three panels, the gorge with lattice work and ten detailed panels of differing shape. The vellum leaf, with a cream background and borders of pastel pink and turquoise, has a central oval cartouche depicting The Ponte Milvio in Rome with St. Peter's in the background. The reserves are painted with classical motifs and the leaf is further decorated with motifs derived from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The verso is plain. Contained in a blue 19th century card fan box. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Comes with descriptive note/ticket with a price of £280.00. Also noted to have been purchased from Mrs Pamela Hudson on July 14th 1979 for £175.00. Exhibited in the Brighton Art gallery.The upper guard has a period repair in ivory mid- way down the lower, section, hard to spot, and the lower guard has a similar repair mid-upper section . Uncommon location for a Grand Tour fan. The leaf is somewhat rubbed and crinkled and has some nicks to the tops of the folds. The box is quite damaged.

A Good Chinese Carved Ivory Fan, Qing Dynasty, the deeply carved monture mounted à l'Anglaise with a cream gauze leaf embroidered with pastel silks in pink, lilac and green. Contained in the original fitted box of black lacquer, gold figural decoration to the exterior, and a cream silk lining to the lid painted with large birds and varied flowers. Finished with a double cream silk tassel. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29.5cmClean and sound.

Lot 2025

A Neo-Classical Fan, circa 1790, the gorge of ivory, the guards worked in a gold metal, the upper sections incised and set with paste in regular lines, the gorge sticks carved and pierced. The double stipple engraved silk leaf is extensively embroidered with tiny gold sequins, bordering a central cartouche showing classical maidens, Cupid with his bow, and other winged cherubs, probably a depiction of the toilet of Venus, and two side vignettes painted with ladies next to trees with winged cherubs in the shadows. Elsewhere there are four blue ovals in Wedgewood style, and sequins fill any reserves. Guard length 9.75 inches or 25cm Purchased at Christie's SK on the 13th May 1980 for £150.00. According to the Christie's catalogue, the fan was believed to have belonged to Queen Caroline. The Queen, wife of George II, died in 1837. Queen Caroline, (b 1768), wife of the Prince Regent, was Princess of Wales from 1795 to 1820 and nominally Queen 1820-21, George IV having refused to have her crowned.In a few minor areas the recto silk has perished but is well supported by both the verso layer and the propensity of sequins.

Lot 2027

A 1760's Ivory Fan of Cabriolet Form, the monture carved and pierced, painted and gilded, with a design of birds, flowers, fruit and figures. The upper leaf section is painted with a large cartouche of a farmer picking fruit and presenting his harvest to two seated ladies, with a young boy playing with a dog in the foreground. The reserves feature various smaller vignettes of landscapes and a seascape. The lower leaf features a shepherd and shepherdess in a rural setting. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.5 inches 26.5cm Provenance: Purchased from Christie's SK on July 20th 1993, lot 157, and illustrated in the catalogue. Formerly in the collection of the Baroness Adele von Bornstedt The leaf panels have been reinforced with restoration materials.

Lot 2007

An 18th Century Carved and Pierced Ivory Fan, in the chinoiserie style, the guards quite delicately carved, the painted vellum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise with various depictions of daily life. In the centre, a lady holds a fixed fan before a seated gentleman, his servant shading him with a large branch of foliage, to whose right a woman carries a water pitcher, whereas to the left a solitary figure is seated in contemplation. The verso shows another landscape with distant mountains, a figure to the foreground holding a fixed fan. Guard length 9.75 inches or 24.5cm Purchased at Bonhams London on May 16th 1980 for £90.00The monture is grubby, the leaf is a little tired and is rubbed on the folds. The recto retains good colour, the verso is very yellowed.

A Mid-18th Century French Ivory Fan, mounted with a double leaf painted in differing shades of pink en camaieu, bordered in pink, and depicting figures in a pastoral setting, the verso painted in a similar fashion with figures in a simple landscape. The monture, carved and pierced, is painted with flowers and birds in complementary colours, the upper guard continuing the painted flower motif and carved with a boy playing a flute. Lot 2017

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture elaborately carved and gilded, the gorge particularly to note, with medallions containing gilded profiles and others with cherubs, and the Sun King, other sticks designed as columns, and the addition of silvered, almost minute sequin shapes which glint in the light. The double vellum (?) leaf is tinged with pale pink, the central cartouche showing travellers at an Inn, Food and drink being served, and two side vignettes continue the travelling theme with a depiction of an encampment and a port with boats and provisions. The reserves are filled with swags of roses and gold stripes. The verso shows a rural scene by a river with a couple taking their rest, a fisherman and a church. Contained in a later card fan box covered in cream silk. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cmLoss to some of the backing MOP, two upper gorge sticks only have it present. Some rubbing to the folds.

A Circa 1870's to 1880's Ivory Brisé Fan, of fontange form, the fifteen inner sticks plain, the upper guard elaborately carved in high relief with harvesting tools, including a scythe, rake, corn sickle. Ivory loop. Possibly German or Austrian. Guard length 5.5 inches or 14cm. Height at tallest point 8.75 inches or 22cm Purchased at an Antiques fair in 1977.Good. No losses noted.

Lot 2191

An Early 19th Century Chinese Lacquer Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, in mainly black and gold, some light touches of red highlighting, especially to the guards. The recto features a central cartouche showing an impressive building with pagoda roof and a man seated outside waiting for his attendants who are attending to his needs. The side vignettes, of an unusual pear shape, feature rural locations, each with two figures. The tips of each fan stick, of which there are nineteen inner sticks and two guards, each feature individual figures going about their daily tasks, carrying wood, fishing, both rurally and close to different buildings. The verso is similar but features several figures, one carrying a flowing standard, another leading a horse with rider, a large building with pagoda roof behind. The side panel to the left features a servant serving refreshment to his master, and to the right a figure rides an ox. The tips feature different figures and activities to those on the recto. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm. Together with A Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, circa 1840, with sixteen inner sticks and two guards. The guards are very intricately carved with perhaps a bat, and a dragon looking up at two figures amongst foliage. The stick tips feature robed figures and different beasts, a dragon curling its body at each side across several sticks. The main body of the fan is carved with unusual buildings and in the centre a figure on horseback with his attendants. Two figures hold open fans. The verso is uncarved. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18.5cm (2)The lacquered fan is in good order with good colour and detail. The ivory brisé is defective, missing some sticks, others damaged, and the ribbon is detached. One stick has completely broken but the sections are present. One is damaged at a tip. Possibly a stick missing to each side where buildings are incomplete.

A Late 1880's Ivory Brisé Fan, most likely Austrian, the fifteen wide inner sticks plain save for a floral painting on the recto, of deep pink dog roses and buds, with dark green leaves. Completed with a shaped ivory loop. The verso is plain. Guard length 8 inches or 20cmSound and clean, very slightly warped seen when closed, ribbon intact.

An Elegant Circa 1900 Fan, the silver gauze leaf of palmette form, applied with a strong ivory net and ivory silk and lavishly embroidered with silver sequins and spangles, featuring a heart to the centre. The monture, of white Mother-of-pearl, is shaped, and clouté in silver, the gorge being carved and pierced. Marked for Duvelleroy on the verso. Lot 2011

A Third Quarter 18th Century Ivory Fan, the sticks pierced and the upper guards carved with flowers, this section painted in soft blue, pink and green and backed with cerise foil. The lower gorge sticks are painted with delicate pink flowers, almost certainly at a later date. The double paper leaf has several panels. The largest showing a shepherdess accompanied by a lady holding a fan, a small boy playing a pipe to the right. Elsewhere, two vignettes are painted with cherubs holding flaming torches aloft whilst seated on clouds, and to the far sides of the leaf are courting couples. The verso has the air of an earlier fan, with exquisitely detailed flower posies, painted with auriculas, parrot tulips, roses, Turk's cap lilies, peonies and foliage, insects and butterflies arriving for the pollen. Contained in a silk fan sleeve woven with flowers and embroidered with sequins, with drawstring.
