A Mughal carved ivory composite animal priming flask North India, second half of the 17th Centuryof curved form, in two sections with hinged brass lever to one side, carved in relief with two antelopes to the nozzle surrounded by leopards, a bird and further antelopes, the eyes of the antelope set with glass beads, the body engraved with panels containing leopards pursuing antelopes, the end with an antelope, an elephant and two further animals, with stand 23 cm. longFootnotes:This is one of a series of carved ivory priming flasks attributed to Mughal workshops of the 17th century. Comparable examples are preserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum (no. IS.382.1896), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (no. 2009.1357) and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (nos. 32.25.2420 and 07.71).
