Travelling chess set by Jaques of London, with natural and stained, turned ivory pieces, in mahogany folding box, stamped 'Jaques Patentees, London in Statu Quo Chessboard', cased, 29cm x 23cm when open and with canvas carrying bag. Information provided by the present owner "The ‘chessboard’ was last used by my father in 1913 - 1915 when he was in the Roughriders, a London regiment that was in one of the last camel charges of the British army. He would play chess with a fellow officer on camel-back until the order was given to charge. The board was then locked and, when the dust had settled, unlocked and play resumed, on the assumption that both had survived. My father then switched to the Royal Flying Corps, where the opportunities for playing chess in the air were somewhat limited !"Looks to have original pieces, although these are somewhat worn, with some chips/losses, scratches, splits . Locking mechanism does not appear to work, so needs attention. Some general signs of wear and tear. Bag looks to be newer.
