Francis Surridge Davey, (Surrage). He joined Cerberus as a 1st Class Volunteer in September 1809. His place of birth listed as Taunton in Somerset. Promoted to Midshipman aged 12 on the 10th November 1810. Among other actions by the ship a Lt James Pettet of HMS Cerberus went with boats into Zara and destroyed three gunboats, one of which sank whilst a prize 14th June 1810. Attacked by gunboats on the 20th/21st June which were beaten off. Again in a boat action with other ships of the squadron, they captured prisoners and goods from Ograye. On the 18th August 15 men were flogged for drunkeness and disobedience on board Cerberus, it appears that floggings were not uncommon on this ship. After an action on the 5th Jan 1811 where ships were sunk at Termoly, they again sunk ships in a boat action at Ortona. On the 13th March 1811 they were in action against the French when Midshipman Davey was killed. Called the Battle of Lissa against five French Frigates, a Corvette and other vessels capturing two of them, a third blew up. Francis Davey was to see a lot of action service in his short lifetime, ending in his 14th year. The miniature has a young Midshipman in uniform facing to the left, watercolour on ivory which is unsigned. The reverse has in pen, F S Davey died March 13th 1811 in action on board the Cerberus off the Island of Lifsa. Commander Capt Wilby.
