Royal Flying Corps interest- Caroline Agnes Burras First World War portrait miniature on ivory of 2nd Lieutenant Frank Skelton R.F.C., monogrammed C.B., in a black papier-mâché frame. Included is the original photograph of 2nd Lieutenant Skelton, (which the miniature is a copy of) along with a calling card bearing his name. APHA Ref: 91CGXY17N.B. Second Lieutenant Frank Skelton, son of William and Fanny Skelton from Leeds was killed on 21st October 1917, aged 19 years, only a few weeks after arriving at the front. Prior to his death he had been studying Medicine at Downing College Cambridge, where he also composed verse for the Colleges magazine 'The Griffin'. During his time at Cambridge, he also trained with the University’s Officer Training Corps, and in January 1917 was given a commission in the Royal Flying Corps with 28th Squadron. After his death in October 1917, he was buried in Mendingham Military Cemetery in Belgium. The last words on his headstone are Downing College’s motto ‘Quaerere Verum’, meaning ‘Seek the Truth’. Following his death, his parents also paid for a commemorative window in the Memorial Hall of Willaston School, which Skelton also attended.
